Tra il 2005 e il 2018 Schoeller ha fotografato i suoi soggetti "per creare una piattaforma di livello dove le nozioni esistenti di celebrità valori e onestà dello spettatore vengono sfidate". Schoeller ha realizzato questo obiettivo sottoponendo i suoi soggetti a un trattamento tecnico uguale: ogni ritratto è un primo piano di un volto con lo stesso angolo di ripresa e la stessa illuminazione. Le espressioni sono costantemente neutre serie ma rilassate nel tentativo di far emergere le differenze dei suoi soggetti e catturare momenti "che sembrano intimi non esposti". L'ispirazione di Schoeller per Close è stata la serie delle torri d'acqua di Bernd e Hilla Becher la sua ambizione di adattare il loro approccio sistematico alla ritrattistica. Tra i soggetti famosi di Schoeller ce ne sono anche alcuni sconosciuti per rendere il suo progetto un "informale studio antropologico dei volti del nostro tempo". Steidl, hardcover
