1948réf. 13691New York: The MacMillan Company 1948. First Edition. Hardcover with dust jacket. Fine/Very Good. Cirlen dust jacket illustration. 8vo. Pp. x 241. Introduction by Robert Dean Frisbie. Endpaper illustrations. Bound in green cloth; spine lettered in red; red illustrations on cover and spine. Bookplate on front free endpaper else clean throughout. In the price-clipped dust jacket; stamped price of $3.00 added later. Sunning to spine; slightly rubbed edges. A bright copy. A stunning acheivement in autobiography inasmuch as the author began her memoir at age 12 during the thick of WWII in the South Seas. Per the NY TImes review 1948 it's "an adventurous autobiography that makes most South Sea Island fiction seem tame by comparison." The manuscript was discovered by James Michener then a New York editor who had gained popularity for his Tales of the South Pacific. Dust jacket with a stunning Cirlen illustration using Polynesian motifs is now housed within a clear removable archival protector. The MacMillan Company hardcover
1915réf. 0019491915. Very Good. Seventeen decorated leaves with intricate hand-colored border illustrations on all of them. Included are a title page a table of contents twelve leaves with a mixture of verse and prose apercus by Cowper Marcus Aurelius Maeterlinck Chesterton Jefferies and a few lesser known writers then three leaves with borders but blanks within. These borders stand out for their variety and the panache of their execution. While a few may owe a debt to work done before such as that by Beardsley or Parrish Ms. Harper also seems to anticipate high Art Deco style and even later aesthetics than that. Ms. Harper mixes cleverly the geometric the abstract the figurative the natural. The pleasure to be derived from these borders is that from miniatures -- splashy color plates these are not! Further there is nothing corny sentimental or pedestrian about the illustrations which usher us into the little worlds of Ms. Harper's imagination. The text is also hand-written and while not calligraphic it is uniform neat and attractive. unknown
