With the binders' typed description of the binding on Sangorski & Sutcliffe letterhead laid in at front. ◆Tips of joints and corners almost imperceptibly rubbed one leaf with small faint stain a few minute marginal adhesions otherwise INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY IN VIRTUALLY PERFECT CONDITION. This is a finely bound and finely printed edition of a group of essays short stories and autobiographical and travel sketches originally published in various periodicals and first printed as a collection in 1881. Founded in 1908 by the London publishers Chatto & Windus and operated by Philip Lee Warner the Florence Press had as its expressed intention the production of "beautiful books in the choicest types . . . in larger editions and at lower cost than was usual with such monuments of typography as the issues of the Kelmscott and other presses." Florence books are readily distinguishable by their special type designed by Herbert P. Horne after 15th century Italian faces that are elegant simple and easily readable. Binders Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe met as boys attending Douglas Cockerell's bookbinding classes at the L. C. C. Central School. Cockerell was so impressed by their skill that he hired Sutcliffe as a finisher and Sangorski as a forwarder. In 1901 Francis and George went into business for themselves and before long they had become two of the most renowned English binders of the 20th century. We can date the time of our binding to the decade of the 1910s because there is a letter from the binders laid in with an explanation of the decoration on stationery with the printed date "191__." The letter indicates that "250 different pieces of various colored leathers are used as inlays" many to suggest the contents of the essays: "the wedding bells and heart border are suggestive of the first essay 'Virginibus Puerisque.' The front centerpiece composed of spring flowers surrounded by a wreath of oak suggests 'Crabbed Age and Youth' and the back centerpiece suggests 'Pan's Pipes.'" In terms of its design quality of execution and condition the binding is simply beautiful. Published for the Florence Press by Chatto & Windus unknown books
1915rif. 0019491915. Very Good. Seventeen decorated leaves with intricate hand-colored border illustrations on all of them. Included are a title page a table of contents twelve leaves with a mixture of verse and prose apercus by Cowper Marcus Aurelius Maeterlinck Chesterton Jefferies and a few lesser known writers then three leaves with borders but blanks within. These borders stand out for their variety and the panache of their execution. While a few may owe a debt to work done before such as that by Beardsley or Parrish Ms. Harper also seems to anticipate high Art Deco style and even later aesthetics than that. Ms. Harper mixes cleverly the geometric the abstract the figurative the natural. The pleasure to be derived from these borders is that from miniatures -- splashy color plates these are not! Further there is nothing corny sentimental or pedestrian about the illustrations which usher us into the little worlds of Ms. Harper's imagination. The text is also hand-written and while not calligraphic it is uniform neat and attractive. unknown books
1896rif. 001150London New York and Bombay: Longmans Green & Co 1896. Hardcover. Good Plus/No Jacket. Oblong 11 By 9 Inches. 63 pp. Full color plate illustrations not quite every other page with text illustrations interspersed in margins of comic verse. One of the best of the politically dubious relics of late nineteenth century children's literature. It is hard to say whether the infectious humor of the illustrations or of the fluent inspired doggerel almost certainly emulated by the likes of Roald Dahl is the bigger draw. Probably the rarest of the highly desirable Golliwogg series this one taking our characters to Paris Japan and Africa. This copy has considerable soilage on the boards which are illustrated paper pasted onto the boards. Shelfwear along edges and corners. Original spine band survives with some wear by tips and rubbing along gutters. Interior tight. Some scattered soilage to pages but text and especially the illustrations remain attractive. FLORENCE RENA SABIN 1871 – 1953 was a pioneer for women in science; she was the first woman to hold a full professorship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine the first woman elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the first woman to head a department at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. In 1896 Sabin enrolled at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as one of fourteen women in her class. The school opened in 1893 and was co-ed from the beginning because of an early donor's contingency which required the admittance of female students. while at Hopkins Sabin's observational skills and perseverance in the laboratory caught anatomist Franklin P. Mall's attention. Mall's mentorship was foundational to her future research and consequent legacy. Upon graduation Sabin obtained an internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital under physician Sir William Osler. She was finally appointed professor of embryology and histology in June 1917 the first woman to become a full professor at a medical college. She continued her research on the origins of blood vessels which in 1924 Sabin's earned her presidency of the American Association of Anatomists. In 1925 she was voted into the National Academy of Sciences. She was the first woman to gain membership in this prestigious body and would remain the lone female member for the next 20 years. FRANKLIN PAINE MALL 1862-1917 earned his MD from the University of Michigan in 1883. After completing his degree Mall moved to Heidelberg to study ophthalmology. However in 1884 he moved to Leipzig where he became a student of embryologist Wilhelm His and met William H. Welch future dean of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1886 Mall enrolled in a fellowship in the department of pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital where he started a collaboration with William S. Halsted. In 1889 Mall was offered an adjunct professorship of anatomy at Clark University in Worchester Mass. where he developed an embryological research program. With the opening of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1893 William Welch appointed Mall head of the department of anatomy. At Johns Hopkins Mall worked with Ross G. Harrison Florence R. Sabin George L. Streeter and Warren H. Lewis. Mall edited the first six volumes of the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Contributions to Embryology. In 1913 Mall had appealed to the Carnegie Institution to create a department of embryology that would be housed at Johns Hopkins. He received a $15000 grant that established the department which Mall chaired until his death in 1917. PROVENANCE: SIDNEY P. SWARTZ 1896-1977 earned his MD from Columbia University where he later served as professor of cardiology. He practised at Montefiore Hospital New York for over 50 years.
