"A minimal and austere telling of the story of Joan of Arc's trial and execution. Bresson's shortest feature film is a wonderful example of his evolution towards a stripped-down essentialist aesthetic style. As in all of his films here Bresson attempts to go beyond the surface to the soul of his subject and in The Trial of Joan of Arc he achieves this goal with a film that reveals a great deal about human nature and particularly the resilience of the human spirit. Hardcover. 4to; iv 5-221 pages; Contents clean and secure in original pictorial cloth binding - olive cloth with elaborate gilt lettering and onlay photogravure image of an actress; minor chipping at spine ends rubbed at corners. Bears the attractive engraved bookplate of actress Fania Marinoff designed by Willy Pogany. Inscribed on ffep to Fania Marinoff from Noel Sullivan -- "A belated birthday present. / May it prove useful!!! / Noel" PROVENANCE: Fania Marinoff 1890 – 1971 was a Russian-American actress who as a child was smuggled on board a ship headed to America. Undernourished and uneducated at the age of 8 she was sent to live with her older brother and his wife. A year later Marinoff made her stage debut as a little boy in Cyrano de Bergerac at the El Itch Theater. This launched the beginning of what would be a 50-year performing career. In 1914 Marinoff married American writer and photographer Carl Van Vechten. Within the first year together Van Vechten told Marinoff that she was more than he could have dreamed of saying she was “the only one that I have ever found who completely satisfies me.” From the beginning of their relationship Marinoff was aware of Van Vechten's homosexual desires. The couple played a prominent role in the Harlem Renaissance. Marinoff was an actress and dancer for almost 50 years. Her career bloomed when she became the lead actress in the Greenwich Village Players. She played supporting and lead roles in dozens of Broadway plays between 1903 and 1937 seven U.S. silent movies between 1914 and 1917 and three short films in 1915. In the last few years of her career she volunteered at the Stage Door Canteen entertaining troops from 1942 to 1945. After retiring from acting in the late 1940s she and her husband remained active in artistic circles. Reginald Noël Sullivan December 25 1890 –1956 was a wealthy American concert singer philanthropist and patron of the arts who is remembered for entertaining performers artists and writers in his opulent residence on Hyde Street San Francisco. In addition to the Van Vechtens Sullivan's circle included many African Americans whose artistic and other endeavors he supported. In particular he was a friend and patron of Langston Hughes. Sullivan had a 30-year-long romantic friendship with actor Ramon Novarro. AUTHOR: Florence Adelaide Fowle Adams 1863 – 1916 was an American dramatic reader actress author and teacher. Fowle joined the faculty of the Boston School of Oratory where she taught the Delsarte method of dramatic expression developed by the teacher François Delsarte. Feeling the lack of a textbook for beginning students that clearly set forth the principles of the Delsarte method she published her own book on the Delsarte method Gestures and Pantomimic Action using herself as the model for the volume's many illustrations. She occasionally appeared on stage in dramatic roles; for example as Julie de Mortemar in Edward Bulwer-Lytton's play Richelieu. She also organized her own company of young women for staging tableaux vivants the Boston Ideal Tableaux Company. . 1897. Edgar S. Werner hardcover
