The three contributors shared the price of fl. 500 but only Roldanus' work was found suitable for publication. In his work he goes into great detail as to the necessary provisions required both in time of peace and at war. Amersfoort, 1843). When also the pamphlet "Vlugtige bedenkingen tegen de denkbeelden van een oud soldaat (.)" appeared shortly thereafter, Stieltjes was quick to respond and his publisher issued in haste the publication "Nadere ontwikkeling (.)" (Nijmegen 1843). A few years later Stieltjes wrote in length his "Is Nederland nog te verdedigen? Toestemmend beantwoord door den schrijver der denkbeelden van een oud - soldaat (.)" (Nijmegen, 1849), to be followed by "'Hoe Nederland te verdedigen is. In ruwe trekken aangeduid, door een Oud-Soldaat" (Nijmegen, 1853). See also: W. J. Knoop in "De Gids", 14th year, 1949-50.

Prins' "De opleiding der compagnie" was published in 1888, also by Sijthoff of Leiden, and generated direct criticism, notably from Baron van Voorst tot Voorst and Sprokkelaar. Both Prins and his Publisher found it necessary to react directly: "Werd ons geschrift door sommigen met ingenomenheid begroet, het lokte van anderen een critiek uit, die ons in 't belang der zaak voorkomt, niet geheel onbeantwoord te moeten blijven." A few months later appeared the present Reply. It is interesting to note that the original publication comprised of 96 pages, while the Reply required no less than 39 pages to defend it.
