The loose page is worn on the right side.; VERY HARD TO FIND.;"The fame of the Hatcher collection spread when over two thousand porcelains of the Transitional Period which covers the years between 1620 and 1682 were sold in March 1984 for between three and ten times their estimated values. Most interested people did not know then that only a part of the total number of pieces twenty-three thousand approximately which Captain Hatcher of Singapore had salvaged from a depth of 40 meters in the South China Sea had changed hands. When another eighteen thousand pieces were auctioned only three months after predictions were that prices could not hold. But they remained high and very high. Lot 315 the cover to a barrel-shaped jar painted with a cyclical date corresponding to 1643 and estimated at f 300 and f 500 went for f 17.000. When the first Hatcher-pieces had been on sale in Amsterdam no one had yet recognised this material's importance. This quickly changed. The last pieces of the recovery originally held back as a private collection are now on offer. As a whole the recovery strikingly illustrates the variety of Transitional productions and the diverse qualities of porcelain China produced and exported around 16-40-1650. The largest number was of luxury items mostly small-sized for instance in the form of wine-cups tea-bowls and stem-bowls vases covered boxes and the like. Larger items included dishes and bowls as one might have used them for food at table. covered jars and bottles kendi's tea- and wine-pots censers urinals even night-lights. Many pieces were carefully shaped and painted. Though some were glazed monochrome or overglaze polychrome a vast majority was blue-white. Considering the fact that these porcelains had laid in silt and salt for more than three hundred years and that they had been recovered from fair depths they were in surprisingly good condition. Once all these pieces are dispersed it will be important to recall what they looked like as an assemblage and to have them available in public collections. In Holland some are already displayed in musea. The catalogues which describe them 7 December 1983 14 March and 12-13 June 1984 and 14 February 1985 respectively are important background for anyone concerned with the study of wares of this type." introduction by Dr. Barbara Harrison Director of the Municipal Museum Princessehof Leeuwarden. Auction catalogue held at Christie's Amsterdam on the 7 December 1983 with 431 lots including 178 from the Van Gulik Collection.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Interior with minor signs of wear.; INCLUDES LOOSE LEAFLET WHICH CORRECT A PRINTERS ERROR ON A FEW ILLUSTRATIONS.; "The last time 1 met Robert van Gulik was at a meeting of the Netherlands Society of Oriental Studies in 1965 where he first had treated the august audience to a solid piece of Chinese art history and then during the coffee break gleefully told me that he was busy negotiating the terms for a Broadway show based on his Judge Dee novels. I suppose that that little incident has remained alive in my memory because it so aptly illustrates the two sides of his character and the two fields in which he was constantly active: scholarly erudition and literary entertainment. The remarkable thing about Robert van Gulik was that these two areas did not clash they reinforced each other and even to a large extent overlapped. His scholarly work was clearly guided by his artistic Interests and his preference for 'playful' theses: painting calligraphy classical Chinese music sexual life In pre-modern China crime and detection and even the traditional Chinese lore concerning his pet animal the gibbon. And on the other hand the works which he wrote for the general public - as a form of relaxation primarily for himself as a means to escape from the chores of diplomatic routine based on a broad and many-sided familiarity with Chinese history and culture. They were byproducts of his amazing sinological erudition accurate down to the smallest detail to such an extent that a German professor of Chinese language and literature once confided to me to have prescribed the Judge Dee novels to his students as compulsory reading materials. This remarkable versatility was no doubt largely due to his personal experience and personal involvement with the subjects which he studied: as a collector of rare books and works of art an admired calligrapher an able performer on the Chinese lute and a lover of all the good things East Asian life could offer. More than any other sinologist of modern times he identified himself with the cultural ideals and life-style of pre-modern China and in particular with those of the Chinese mandarin who like himself so often combined the official career with the pleasures of scholarship artistic creativity and savoir-vivre. That also explains why the different fields of his activity did not clash: whatever he wrote about was part of his life the man is fully reflected in his work from his most serious contribution to scholarship to his most playful novelette. For that Robert van Gulik will be remembered by anybody who has the privilege of having known him." introductory tex "Robert Van Gulik Diplomat and Mandarin" by Dr. E. Zurcher Professor of East-Asian History Director Sinological Institute State University Leiden The Netherlands. Christie's Amsterdam paperback
