1964réf. 362757Milan: Galleria Schwartz 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. A twenty-image gallery of original engravings printed from plates made in 1962 the defining year of American Pop Art by the defining artists of the era including Andy Warhol his first multiple Roy Lichtenstein Wayne Thiebaud Jim Dine and others. These etchings are presented in book format with each artwork bound into the book in a mat with a clear plastic protector. Usually these images are four removed from the book. However in your cataloguer's most humble opinion this book presentation is far superior to looking at individual images hanging on a wall. The intimate presentation of the book and the alphabetical sequencing which requires patience to find the famous works leads to unexpected discoveries. And the excitement of having a Warhol you can set on your lap is a real joy. For this issue of the International Anthology of Contemporary Engraving the editors commissioned the hottest young artists on the American scene to make engravings for this book mostly in 1962 for publication two years later. The highlight is Roy Lichtenstein's etching of a light switch. Wayne Thiebaud adapted a painting of yo-yos shifting the placement of the toys for this black-and-white medium. Andy Warhol appropriated an ad for a discount cooking pot that he found on page 35 of the October 16 1962 New York Daily News and made it visually interesting through clever cropping the ad may have appeared on other days as well but I found it first on October 16 and I stopped looking. These engravings were issued in an edition of 100 copies: 60 numbered with Arabic numerals 25 numbered with Roman numerals for the contributors and 15 artist's proofs marked "e.a." for "épreuve d'artiste." The mats measure 9 by 11-3/4 inches plus the binding stub. This bound volume includes 8 leaves two blank for text with all contents presented in English as well as French and Italian translation. The introduction is by Billy Klüver who worked with Andy Warhol. The original etchings presented in this volume are all signed by the artist with the exception of the Warhol which is blindstamped. They are as follows with captions for untitled works invented by your cataloguer and the mediums and plate sizes w x h taken from the cataloging of the Museum of Modern Art website: 1. George Brecht. DELUXE SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES SIGNED BY LICHTENSTEIN complete with 24 offset lithographs printed in color on Coronado Opaque SST Cover paper. Although known primarily for large bold works Roy Lichtenstein "always worked from meticulous finished sketches. During a distinguished career of almost three decades he has seldom deviated from the practice of using these sketches to generate paintings prints and sculpture in ongoing and discrete series. "The twenty-four drawings in this sketchbook are 'all landscapes figures and houses but they are essentially landscapes.' They do in part recall certain of his landscape images of the mid-sixties. However now devoid of the familiar Lichtenstein dots each is composed exclusively of brushstrokes-a combination of free seemingly spontaneous marks evoking Abstract Expressionism played against what the artist refers to as 'cartoon' brushstrokes that continue to represent his concern for artifice. "The drawings in Landscape Sketches 1984-1985 inspired by a semiabstract landscape that appeared as an element in his recent Paintings series constitute his first attempt at creating 'plain landscapes out of all brushstrokes'-the frankly 'fake' or cartoon marks providing the link that allows us to associate these new works with those we recognize as archetypal." Constance W. Glenn Introduction. Note: In addition to the 100 signed and numbered copies there were an additional 10 artist's proofs issued. New York: Harry N. Abrams 1986. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 208 pages; 138 illus. 118 col. . -- with a bonus offer--; Between 1961 and 1968 at the height of the Pop art movement Roy Lichtenstein 1923-1997 created about 50 large black-and-white drawings. Not only was their imagery culled from consumer culture entirely new--baked potatoes ads for foot medication and BB Guns--but so was their treatment which drew on the rudimentary character of cheaply printed commercial drawings. Conceived independently from Lichtenstein's paintings these drawings recast illustrations from newspaper ads and comic books into works of keen visual intensity curiously echoing the clean-edge aesthetic of 1960s geometric abstraction. "Drawing is the basis of my art" Lichtenstein later affirmed; "It is where my thinking takes place." Published for an exhibition at the Morgan Library in New York this richly illustrated publication offers 120 color illustrations plus essays on Lichtenstein's technique and on his little-known 1967 Aspen project in which the artist transformed a room into a black-and-white cartoon drawing. . 2010. 3775726438 . Ills. 32 x 32 cm. -- with a bonus offer--; This publication surveys the seminal group of Girl paintings by Roy Lichtenstein. In the Summer of 1961 Lichtenstein embarked on a series of iconic images of women taken directly from newspaper clippings and the romance comic books prevalent in post-war America. The anonymity of mass-produced cheap comics helped him capture specific impressions of real life while maintaining the necessary degree of aesthetic distance afforded by what he understood to be the 'high restrictive quality of art'. The 'Girl' paintings together with the war images or 'Boy' paintings established him as a major protagonist of the American Pop Art movement. His amalgamation of text and image high and low culture and his strategy to involve appropriated images continues to be a rich source of inspiration for subsequent generations of artists from Richard Prince Jeff Koons and Raymond Pettibon to John Currin and Elizabeth Peyton.A conversation between Jeff Koons and Dorothy Lichtenstein opens the catalogue. The publication also brings together an exceptional collection of over 130 images of paintings drawings sources and documentary photographs. Included in these images are 22 full-coloured plates of the 'Girl' paintings 18 of which are featured in the exhibition. The catalogue closes with a select chronology of Roy Lichtenstein's life pinpointing important exhibitions and occasions. An artist's book response to the Girl paintings created by Richard Prince is also included as an insert. . 2008. 0300149271 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 128 pp. ; 79 illus. 73 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; Roy Lichtenstein in His Studio is a portfolio of vivid and engaging photographs by Laurie Lambrecht who was an administrative assistant to Lichtenstein for three years. She and the artist worked together daily and the bond between them is evident in the photographs. Lichtenstein is shown working on two major series Reflections and The Interiors. He is completely absorbed oblivious to the camera as he mounts ladders assembles colors composes and steps back to consider the effect. During this period Lambrecht assisted in gathering material for a major retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. As a result the photographs include scrapbooks and sketchbooks and other archival material that document Lichtenstein’s entire career. There are stencils of Ben-Day dots clippings from newspapers and comic books Polaroid snapshots rolls of tape and boxes of colored pencils. Lichtenstein encouraged Lambrecht to make photographs and was often pleased and amused by the results. These images offer fascinating insight into Lichtenstein’s working processes and source materials as well as being vibrant works of art in their own right. In her essay Dorothy Lichtenstein wife of the artist recalls the collegial atmosphere of the studios in New York and Southampton in the early 1990s a time of extraordinary productivity. Edward Robinson an associate curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art describes Lambrecht’s process and approach. . 2011. 1580933181 . The Monacelli Press hardcover
