Roger Bastide fut professeur de sociologie de 1938 à 1954 et l'un des fondateurs de l'Université de São Paulo (USP), aux côtés de Claude Lévi-Strauss. Pierre Verger (1902-1991), dit Fatumbi, fut ethnographe et photographe spécialiste des religions afro-brésiliennes, notamment Babalawó, culte dans lequel il fut initié.
