1983réf. 618c7612Vancouver: University of British Columbia Press in co-operation with the Provincial Archives of British Columbia 1983. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. 218 pages. From limited edition of 1600 copies. "Concerned entirely with the Haidas of the Queen Charlotte Islands of the last century the intricacies of the kinship patterns of the great families and how they saw themselves as part of a fantastic but in its own terms logical cosmos and most of all how this was all expressed in their remarkable architecture with its perfectly integrated massive carved and painted embellishments the great totem poles of the Haidas." - from Foreward. "The documentary photographs that survive are among the few remaining records which illustrate the richness and variety of Haida monumental art. Of the more than five hundred carved poles which appear in the plates only about fifty were removed to museums for safekeeping. The remainder have perished entirely or survive at the village sites as decayed fragments overgrown with the lush vegetation of the islands." - from Preface. Light external wear and soiling to cream-coloured cloth-covered boards. No external markings. Discreet bookplate and bit of writing inside front board. Blindstamp to lower corner of title page. Bit of writing in upper left corner of title page. Remnant of card pocket inside back board. Binding tight. A quality copy of this magnificent work. 1879réf. xxx018Truckee: Crowley & McGlashan 1879. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 1st printing. Rebound in blue cloth with original decorative cover fabric of both boards and spine laid on. About one-half of the gilt title on spine is visible and can be read. 193pp. Decorative vignettes at top and end of each chapter. Rebound with new endpapers and adjacent blank leaves. The major flaw in this copy is that the title page was torn off entirely from about 1" in from the gutter to the gutter. It was reattached with tape and the tape is a six sixteenth 6/16" track running vertically at slightly different angles on the sheet. Photo available. I have priced this copy accordingly. Laid in is the bindery company's receipt Yakima WA. It was rebound in 1993 for $9.19 tax included. A tight copy now. The original laid on fabric is an attractive uniformly near royal blue on a new blue binding. Rocq California Local History #6004; Howes Mc102 "Best account of the most harrowing of all overland disasters."; Graff/Colton 2610 "The ordeal of the Donner Party is one of the most memorable events in the history of overland narratives.". The Graff/Colton copy is the Holliday copy and was bound in black cloth. It appears most copies were bound in brownish cloth. A truly rare book. Crowley & McGlashan hardcover

1985réf. 762j2925USA: Garland Publishing. Good with no dust jacket. First Edition. Hardcover. "Deals with that sedulously ignored topic death in the woods." - p. xiii Author lost an Uncle and Great Uncle in logging accidents and carried a dead man from the woods in 1937. "Because nobody except their immediate families seemed unduly concerned about these killings I decided back in 1973 to investigate the matter. This study tells the story of the ordinary logger who with his axe and saw and accompanied by his sweaty partner the sawdust-covered millworker by grueling labor cut the trees from east to west across this continent. We will examine not only how they lived from day to day but also how they died. During more than three centuries the two of them served an industry which while busy at its task of producing lumber like an insatiable Moloch used up men and timber at an appalling rate." - Introduction. xxviii 252 p.
