Thomas Nicholson Gibbs 1821-1883 miller merchant manufacturer banker and politician who became closely aligned with Sir John A.Macdonald after Confederation was Oshawa’s chief businessman and financier. He used his connections with Sir John to obtain a loan from the Bank of Montreal to stave off the impending collapse of the St. Lawrence Bank in 1872 and became Macdonald’s confidant and ‘fixer’ on dealing with Toronto capitalists as well as during the Canadian Pacific Railway negotiations. Gibbs was known to be a corrupt politician winning elections by large-scale vote buying and patronage. In 1873 he briefly served as secretary of state for the provinces and superintendent of Indian affairs before moving to the Department of Inland Revenue but the Pacific Scandal and the defeat of Macdonald’s government on 6 Nov. 1873 ended his cabinet career. 1840réf. 44264No Place given 1840. fine. original watercolour on stiff paper 20.8x 27.2cm. With an unobtrusive 7cm tear through the lower left quadrant contemporary manuscript title on the verso "An American Cutter". Overall a fine bright image. A handsome unsigned watercolour depicting a single-horse sleigh pulling a clever-looking American trapper with hunting dog barely keeping up. A lively image probably a Canadian scene very displayable. Reminiscent of Krieghoff. The trapper is looking out ten to fifteen feet behind the dog indicating maybe the pursuit of the legendary wolfe. Reversable archival repair on the version of the tear. unknown

This booklet is an unabashed celebration of how the colonies of the British Empire came to the support of Great Britain during the 2nd Boer War and indeed while the conflict was still taking place. "When Paul Kruger with his burghers came down from Pretoria . threatening and intending to drive the British into the sea . the spirit of the Lion . broke out strong." The booklet briefly describes the Canadian parliamentary action prints a short numerical list ofl "Military Resources of the Colonies" and promotes the McArthur company in a page titled "Commerce Follows the Flag." There are no records evident in my extensive research that this item has previously come up for auction or booksellers' sale. Original copies reside in six institutions five of them in Canada. The green paper covers are faded at the edges have a bit of light spotting and have a few short edge tears. but no chips. The Canadian shield in silver on the front cover is strong along with the title. The silver imprint of the publisher on the cover is not quite as strong. Certainly a good or better copy.
