She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. In this his principal work Serionne rejected the Physiocratic theories of production and taxation; he also refused to accept the prevailing opinion that the population of France was diminishing rapidly. He strongly believed that the discovery of America had stimulated European agriculture and industry, improving levels of employment and that colonial commerce had itself contributed to an increase in the population of Europe (See: Spengler, French Predecessors of Malthus, pp. 315-321). After having run into serious difficulties in France, the author was forced to leave France. This edition with the 'Paris' imprint was apparently destined for export from Holland. - Half-title and first blanks slightly loose at foot in volume one, a very fine copy, with bookplate of G. de Ste Marguerite, very likely belonging to the family of De Bonnet, seigneurs de la Baume, de Saint-Marguerite et de Costefrède.

2005Signed upon title page by author. 180 pages. Index. References. Biographical overview. List of works. Colour illustrated endpapers. "E.J. Hughes is famous for his unforgettably rich and accomplished landscapes, primarily depicting the British Columbia coast. His works now command the highest auction prices ever paid for a living Canadian artist, confirmation of his emergence as a major figure on the international art scene... The passionate collector has always been central to the emergence of important artists. In this extraordinarily personal account, the world of a collector comes alive. Here are 76 Hughes sketches, paintings and prints, in colour and black and white - only a handful previously published in book form - accompanied by a text rich with anecdotes about the joys, frustrations and satisfactions of the chase. This is a very human story of art as master - one which sheds important new light on Hughes and his work." - from dust jacket. "Hughes is the chronicler of a landscape almost too beautiful and too alive with spirit to be believed." - Globe and Mail. Clean, bright and unmarked with negliglble wear. 1991987 + 570 pages. Text in English and French. "Here, for the first time, writing about Canadian art and architecture is systematically listed, cross-referenced, and indexed. But more than that, the work includes a guide to the literature in the form of an accurate summary of the contents of the entries. Scholars will thus be able to make a preliminary evaluation of the sources without first losing themselves in mountains of irrelevant material. That is what establishes this comprehensive listing as a work of scholarship that is far more than a bibliography. The work of the cultural historians can now begin." - from Foreword. Prior owner's stamp upon each front free endpaper otherwise clean, bright and unmarked with light wear. A high-quality copy of this excellent reference. Book
1984201 pages of profoundly fascinating and delightful illustrated history. Author's father (b. 1870) left Yorkshire, England with his young family for Canada in 1909 and arrived in Fife Lake, Saskatchewan where they spent their first winter in a straw house. Author was born in a sod house in 1910 and moved with his family to Montana when he was 6 years old. At age 14 the family moved to Victoria, B.C. and from there to Nanoose Bay, further up Vancouver Island. Most pages contain brief text, accompanied by the author's simple sketches of the way things were. He has stressed the most practical elements of daily life and survival. A priceless compilation of the challenges and genius of the pioneer. Examples include: how to hunt prairie antelope by wearing a white sheet; avoiding flying ants by erecting a pole to your wagon and hanging a coat at its top; uprooting stumps by tying them to nearby trees to be felled; cutting wood by rigging a buzzsaw to the back wheel of a Model "T" Ford truck; and many, many more. Mentions Vancouver Island landmarks such as the Arlington Hotel, Lantzville Hotel, Quarterway Hotel, and more. This book lends itself wonderfully to teaching youngsters the ways of the not-so-distant past. You will have great difficulty in putting it down. Book
