1974réf. SHEL1425Victoria B.C.: Beautiful British Columbia Magazine 1974. First Thus. Soft cover. Very Good. 1st printing full issue of the Fall 1974 issue of Beautiful British Columbia Magazine. The nine-page article which is titled in this listing is primarily composed of terrific color photographs. The text is somewhat brief but adequate. This is a "must have" item for serious collectors of books and articles on the subject. In this article Green writes not so much about the creature Bigfoot/Sasquatch this is four years before his publication of his classic book Sasquatch - the Apes Among Us and just a few years after his three earlier smaller books but about this lovely mountainous lake and river decorated section of southwestern B. C. which is one of the handful of truly classic geographic areas out of which have come historic Sasquatch reports. There are 19 paragraphs of text and 9 photographs including a seldom seen photo of young John Green showing a cast to a young couple and a photo showing one of the early Sasquatch carvings no longer to be seen on the outskirts of Harrison Hot Springs. Mr. Green has lived in the Harrison - Agassiz area of B. C. most of his adult life. He served as mayor of Harrison Hot Springs and as a newspaper publisher during which time he began to take seriously the accounts of local citizens and First Nations people about the Sasquatch. This complete original copy of the magazine is in vg condition with a bit of shelf wear on the back cover near the fold & a bit of the same on a couple of other spots. Beautiful British Columbia Magazine unknown
1973réf. SANSHEL011Toronto: McClelland and Stewart 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 1st printing. Cloth. 192pp. Illus. Presentation signed on title page in 1996 by Dahinden to Oregon cryptozoologist and author George Earley "To George / From / Rene Dahinden / "good Hunting" / Aug. 1996." Earley's custom book plate adorns the front paste down. Dahinden and Hunter's book is an important early book in the field coming after Patterson 1966 after Green's three quarto paperbound books but five years before Green's 1978 tome. This copy very good. The only reason we don't grade it fine is because there is a tiny nick to the top edge of the front board. The dj is complete no chips but has edgewear and some edge creases. Signed copies of either the first edition or the later revised paperbound edition are mighty hard to come by. Dahinden to all who knew him stood alone in dogged research and a personality to go along with it. McClelland and Stewart hardcover

1970réf. 2105008Summerland: N. L. Barlee 1970. First Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. 1st printing. 6.5" x 8.5" quarto pictorial wraps. 100pp. Wonderfully illustrated with maps and drawings by the author. Barlee a schoolteacher and later MP and also producer of a ghost town series on CBC was author and publisher of Canada West which was a series of self-published magazines mainly on mining camps in British Columbia. Barlee visited and researched all these camps. His drawings are in a wonderful homespun but very attractive style Western history fans drool over. Barlee produced this title in a gray cover and an orange-yellow cover. The contents are identical and we have no reason to believe one has precedence over the other. Your bookseller corresponded with Barlee around this time. Scarce. Vg/. N. L. Barlee unknown
1913réf. 2105060Toronto: William Briggs 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st edition. Maroon cloth with gilt-stamped titles & illustration. 468pp. Illus. Former owner's signature on the front paste down slightly offset on the ffep when the ink was not yet dry. I cannot make out the signature but it is very likely from the time of publication. This is one of the two or three most important books of the old cattle ranges of Western Canada. The noted Toronto bookseller Dora Hood in her wonderful 1956 book The Side Door about her bookselling career wrote "This is by far the most authentic book on cattle ranging sic and I was told by one of my western buyers that there is no other on either side of the border to compare with it." She further related that after the publisher published it the author disappeared. "After waiting for a suitable time the books were sold by the publisher at a substantial price and a good profit was realized." It reads welll in terms of accounts of interesting events and also has a lot of range industry information in term so of the growth of the Western Canadian cattle business. A very good copy. We do note a dark stain in the upper right quadrant of the back cover. It does not visually "take over" the appearance of the cover but it needs to be noted. A bit of the same at top of spine. Very scarce copy in descent condition and with the greatest part of the front cover illustration shoulder's up view of cowboy wearing cowboy hat circled by a gold rope with stirrups at the bottom present and not worn off. William Briggs hardcover

1874réf. 1805050London: William Clowes & Sons 1874. First Edition. Hardcover. Poor. First printing. Folio boards. 266pp. Stiff marbled endpapers. An important collection of documents/messages relating to the proposal of the building of a trans-Canadian railway the documents from and to the Earl of Dufferin who was the third Governor-General of Canada. A trans-Canadian railway was promised to British Columbia in exchange for it joining Canadian Confederation but it was rocky going politically in the first few years and Lord Dufferin comments on the rancour between the political parties in Ottawa. This copy has written on the verso of the stiff flyleaf in pencil "Ex Lord Duifferins Library" from Dufferin's library. I can establish no provenance for this and it is not signed by Dufferin. The copy was purchased in Ontario. This copy is DISBOUND but with the marbled boards present. The spine is half present in three broken sections but still includes the title. Pages 127-130 are torn but a somewhat large torn away piece is present. A couple of adjacent pages are torn but not in pieces. The balance of the text is in good condition and the pages are flexible not brittle. An ideal project for a conservator but can be read on a table on in the lap with careful attention. Very scarce and important. The government of Prime Minister MacDonald fell over charges of United States influence and money in the early proposals to build the railway. Of course he later recovered and the railroad was built. William Clowes & Sons hardcover
