1908réf. 2411016London: Edward Arnold 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 1st printing. Pictorial cloth. 206pp. Illustrated with real photos presumably taken by the author. The last page has the imprint " Victoria / B. C./ July 1908" but beside it in ink and pen in an unknown hand the following was added "January 1 - 1916 / sleet & rain." Presumably that was the weather in Victoria on that date. A very old bookplate has been partially removed by a previous owner from the front paste down. Some fraying to top and bottom of spine. Light general soiling to covers. A good copy. This is a fictionalized account that is recognized as strongly autobiographical about the life and dangers of logging on the coast of British Columbia--a life filled with strong personalities that come through in the writing. Reprinted now this is the rare first edition that only comes on the market once in a generation or two. No dust jacket if in fact one was issued. Not in Whale and perhaps wouldn't be due to the fictional genre as written. Edward Arnold hardcover

1912réf. 5021065Berlin Ontario: German Printing and Publishing Co 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. 1st printing. Oblong green gilt-stamped 4to cloth. Unpaginated but well over 200pps. Illustrated with b/w photos portraits and several ads with color toning or outlining. "Special Articles & Illustrative features by Maxwell Publicity Service." "Made in Berlin." Berlin Ontario changed its name in 1961 to Kitchener according to several sources because of rising anti-German sentiment. Originally in 1833 the name was chosen after the capitol of Prussia. Decorative endpapers. Both hinges are "broken" meaning the paper is cracked at the inside hinges and the webbing there is floppy. I have decided not to attempt a cheap repair on this volume & would recommend the buyer take it to a professional in the bookbinding trade. It is too valuable a book to fix it incorrectly. The cloth is moderately soiled & has some moderate wear at the extremities. The quality of the paper the images and advertising and the details of historical and biographical text is really quite extraordinary. There is no age/musty odor which is usually typical of these sorts of books with glossy page stock. The city fathers & businessmen literally titled "Who's Who" are well represented. The ads are splendid. There is a map of "Rural and Long Distance Lines of the Bell Telephone Company in the Waterloo District." The lithographed photos are excellent; they are sharp & properly exposed. Includes group portraits for example of "29th Regimental Band of Berlin "Grey's Horse Troop" There is a splendid 24" x 9" folding Dominion Day "Berlin Ontario" birds eye photograph highlighting in the caption that Berlin is the "furniture centre of Canada." This is really a quality book that needs some careful hinge repair. Although in a number of Canadian libraries this book hardly ever shows up on the resale market. Because of the hinges I have graded this copy "fair." c. German Printing and Publishing Co hardcover

1926réf. 5004076Fort Sainte-Marie Ontario: Sanctuaire des Bienheureus Martyrs Canadiens 1926. First Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. No other printings listed. 12mo printed stapled wraps. 59 numbered pages. Illustrated with photos drawings maps & document facsimile. Former owner's signature in ink top of front cover. Partial description from Parks Canada: "Description of Historic Place. Fort Sainte Marie II National Historic Site of Canada is located within the Beausoleil First Nation land reserve along the southern shore of Christian Island on Georgian Bay in Ontario. The site consists of a clearing bordered by trees some modern homes and the shoreline of Georgian Bay. Low-lying cobble walls probably created by 20th century rock piling delineate the footprint of the square fort as well as its corner bastions. Also included on the site is a large unused Huron burial pit. Over time natural factors have slightly altered the original setting such as the effects of shoreline erosion. The designation refers to the footprint of the fort. Heritage Value Fort Sainte Marie II was designated as a national historic site of Canada because: established in 1649 it was the last Jesuit mission for the Huron-Wendat in this area; it was abandoned by the missionaries in 1650 when they fled to Quebec with some Huron-Wendat supporters; the remaining Huron-Wendat made their last stand against the Iroquois from this fort in 1651 before fleeing to Quebec. Fort Sainte Marie II was constructed in 1649 following the destruction of the former Jesuit mission of Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons Mission National Historic Sites of Canada on the Wye River. The new fort was settled from June 1649 to June 1650 by Jesuit Missionaries French soldiers and Huron-Wendat who had fled from the Wye River mission station after confrontations with Five Nations bands and the Dutch who together sought to break the Huron-Wendat control of northern fur resources." 1950réf. 2210029NY: Rinehart & Co 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 1st printing of the American edition. Red cloth with blindstamp of the publisher on the front cover. 368pp. Illus. Bibliography. Index. Former owner's signature on ffep and some penciled notes on the same. Stewart Holbrook's long review in the New York Herald Tribune is cut out and affixed pasted to the rear paste down and folded. Now we present a mystery. Affixed to the verso of the rear free endpaper facing the newspaper article and with flaps folded is a dj for the same book but showing the price of $4.00 on the flap. Both American & Canadian firsts sport the price of $4.50. However the Holbrook review has $4.00 for the book! The top edge of this extra dj is trimmed back a bit 1/4". Did the publisher intend to publish at $4.00 retail and change its mind and print the same dj with the higher price We don't know. Oh and the original owner of the copy wrote $4.00 on the ffep! The copy is vg with a little fading to the spine; the dj is chipped and has a crease down the front panel. The main chip is to the publisher's name at the bottom a triangle chip removing most of the name. No longer common and this copy ideal for the collector who wants out of the ordinary copies. Oh yes and a wonderful addition of the R of A Series this one being that historical British Columbia river. Rinehart & Co hardcover
1978réf. 2210055Williams Lake BC: The Picture Man Photographic Workshop 1978. First Edition. Soft cover. Good. 1st printing. 4to pictorial blue and white stiff wraps. 312pp. Crammed with fabulous descriptive black and white photos of rodeo action. Inscribed by Wise with a rather scrawling presentation "Jim / Good / working the / / game / Williams / Lake / with / you / Don." On the title page is printed "The copy this book was written photographed edited and pasted up by Done Wise ." According to one website Wise was "The 1976 winner of the Interior Rodeo Association's Bert Roberts Memorial Award -- given to the person who has contributed the most to the promotion of the sport of rodeo." I cannot tell you how thorough and remarkable Wise's rodeo photos are. It appears that the rodeos represented are all around the British Columbia interior of the Cariboo Chilcotin a vast country I have driven through off and on: Douglas Lake Kelowna Clinton Quesnel Williams Lake many more. One entry on pages 218-219 is a good sample with photos "A bull riding classic / Deightman vs. Head Hunter." "It's mighty rare when a cowboy turns down a drink with his partners at stampede time. Mertis Dightman did it once. It was just after he drew the rankest bull that ever did make it to the Williams Lake Stampede" etc. One website says "In 1966 Dightman became the first black cowboy to qualify for the Professional Rodeo Association National Finals." One more example is a full page photo captioned "Diane White on the finer points of goat tying." Cowboys clowns cowgirls horses bulls cows you have it all in this extraordinary book. It is a modern rarity. Only two copies appear in world libraries. Moderately worn covers and back cover with a corner triangle crease. The Picture Man Photographic Workshop unknown
