It shows how throughout her writing career Roy has demonstrated that she is not only a unique Canadian literary figure but that she belongs to the mainstream of twentieth-century literature. Quietly independent aloof from cliques and schools she is guided by her own vivid memories and delicate insights to record truths which are universally applicable. While stressing Roy's difference from her contemporaries and predecessors - both in Canada and abroad - this study cites comparisons between certain aspects of her work and those of other writers where such analogies seem to contribute to an understanding of Roy's achievements." -- back cover. 1840réf. 44264No Place given 1840. fine. original watercolour on stiff paper 20.8x 27.2cm. With an unobtrusive 7cm tear through the lower left quadrant contemporary manuscript title on the verso "An American Cutter". Overall a fine bright image. A handsome unsigned watercolour depicting a single-horse sleigh pulling a clever-looking American trapper with hunting dog barely keeping up. A lively image probably a Canadian scene very displayable. Reminiscent of Krieghoff. The trapper is looking out ten to fifteen feet behind the dog indicating maybe the pursuit of the legendary wolfe. Reversable archival repair on the version of the tear. unknown
2026réf. 1125559870Fredericton New Brunswick: Goose Lane Editions 2026. Book. New. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. pictorial paper 351 pages : illustrations maps portraits some colour :"The book is a documentary history of Bilijk Kingsclear First Nation from the late 18th century to the 1950s. The text is split into three sections 1783-1850 1851-1900 1901-1950. Each section features a brief overview of the historical trends of the period followed by documents such as census and church records government reports newspaper accounts and letters paintings maps and photographs along with glosses from the editor. There is also a brief introduction outlining the research involved in pulling together the book. The book covers the period from the Loyalist arrival in New Brunswick when Ekwpahak -- the traditional gathering place of the Wlastkokewiyik -- was purchased by a Loyalist judge in a highly questionable transaction and the reserve at Kingsclear was established a little upriver of Ekwpahak. The history ends in 1950 in the aftermath of a failed attempt to centralize Wlastkokwey Nation at Kingsclear. The documents clearly demonstrate the destructive impact of colonialism upon the Wlastkokewiyik from their dispossession by Loyalists and the establishment of the Sussex Vale Indian School in the late 18th century to the increasing restrictions on traditional life that both impoverished and oppressed them. They also trace family histories and illustrate what daily life in Bilijk was like."-- Provided by publisher. Goose Lane Editions Paperback
