1989réf. 713h6162Sooke B.C.: R.E. Wells. Fair. 1989. First Edition. Unknown Binding. 0969307349 . "The loss of the British barque JANET COWAN and the seven men who perished in the aftermath was one of the principal shipwreck incidents on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island along that part of the shore known today as the West Coast Trail. It resulted in the recommendations for the construction of the shipwrecked mariner's trail that eventually became a reality. This is the story of that tragic event of 1896 followed by an account of a recent interesting and nostalgic visit to the site by a son of one of the crew of the ill-fated ship. Many items from this the largest sailing ship to meet disaster along the West Coast Trail can be seen today among the rocks and crevaces. This account shows the reader were to observe these artifacts." - back cover. 68 page stapled booklet. Map. Many black and white reproductions of archival photos. "Centers on a 19th-century 'Christian Utopian' mission founded in British Columbia by William Duncan a lay missionary aiming to convert and 'civilize' the Tsimshian people. Facing conflict with church authorities Duncan led his followers to establish New Metlakatla in Alaska in 1887 creating the only federal Indian reserve in Alaska today." - Google AI. Nowhere is this more dramatically illustrated than in the fascinating array of covers and stamps from the Gerry Wellburn collection which we are pleased to present in this book. A native of England "Gerry" 1900-1992 started stamp collecting in 1905. In 1911 he moved to Vancouver Island by which time he had already begun to make and write up his own album pages. 17993 volumi in 8vo (211x132 mm). vii, [5]-321, [3] p., [1] grande cartina ripiegata del Canada e [6] tavole; [4], 344 p. e [4] tavole; [4], 294 p. [mancante l'ultima carta, bianca] e [2] tavole. Chadenat 1228. Leclerc 2996. Sabin 102544.
