"Throughout hr long life, Mildred walked 'the lonely path of peace' with the likes of J.S. Woodsworth, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King." She was a crusading socialist and an absolute pacifist who lived her beliefs in word and deed. But this story of her extraordinary life does not seek to sanctify her. Her foibles and frailties are as much a part of the tale as her deep spirituality and unquenchable dedication to social causes spanning six decades." - from back cover. Unmarked with light wear. réf. 133596Winnipeg: University of Manitoba 1991. 4to Fine. 120pp. Printed on one side. Bibliography. This study is an ethnographic description of contemporary Ukrainian Canadian folk medicine. The focus is on healing techniques of Canadian born Ukrainians primarily in Manitoba. The folk medicine practised in Manitoba consists almost exclusively of wax pouring. This healing method is performed by a few Ukrainian Canadian women and is believed to be an effective cure for evil eye for those people who believe in it. A healer in a small rural Manitoba town is the main informant. Interviews with people who had been to healers in their lifetime are also included. The materials gathered show that urban and rural differentiation does not affect beliefs in folk medicine. Small towns may be physically isolated from large cities but the people are not. Folk medicine and Western biomedicine exist together and may be utilized by the same people. Ukrainian folk medicine continues to be practised and used by more women than men although the younger generation is quickly losing belief in the traditional ways. Historically it is valuable to document Ukrainian healing techniques; anthropologically it contributes to an understanding of how these techniques are used today. 1987réf. 431j2589Toronto: University of Toronto Press. Good in Good dust jacket. 1987. First English Edition. Hardcover. 0802057624 . "In May 1845 Sir John Franklin sailed westward from England in search of the Northwest Passage and was never seen again. Some thirty-five years later Heinrich Klutschak of Prague artiist and surveyor on a small expedition led by Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka of the 3rd US Cavalry Regiment stumbled upon the grisly remains at Starvation Cove of the last survivors among Franklin's men. The Schwatka expedition was prompted by rumours among the Inuit that Franklin had left a cache of documents in a cairn somewhere in the vicinity of King William Island. Klutschak's absorbing account of the journey overland through an unexplored part of the Keewatin district tells the story of the expedition and its findings including large numbers of skeletal remains overlooked by the McClintock expedition and some first-hand accounts from the Inuit of the last days of the Franklin expedition. Includes some of the earliest reliable descriptions of the local native peoples." - dust jacket. First published in German in 1881. xxxi 3 5-261 p. Index. Footnotes. References. Map.
