She participated in the anti-colonial struggle in the second war of independence and despite the death of her son Abdón Calderón at a young age in battle maintained a strong bond with the independence struggle and frequently corresponded with Antonio José de Sucre and Simón Bolívar. In near fine condition. With a portrait of Bolivar. Venezuelan military and political leader Simón Bolívar also known as 'El Libertador' led what are currently the countries of Venezuela Bolivia Colombia Ecuador Peru and Panama to independence from the Spanish Empire in the campaign for the independence of New Granada which began in 1808 and was consolidated with the victory at the Battle of Boyacá on 7 August 1819. Despite a number of hindrances including the arrival of an unprecedentedly large Spanish expeditionary force the revolutionaries eventually prevailed culminating in the victory at the Battle of Carabobo in 1821 which effectively made Venezuela an independent country. Following this triumph over the Spanish monarchy Bolívar participated in the foundation of the first union of independent nations in Latin America Gran Colombia of which he was president from 1819 to 1830. Through further military campaigns he ousted Spanish rulers from Ecuador Peru and Bolivia the last of which was named after him. He was simultaneously president of Gran Colombia present-day Venezuela Colombia Panama and Ecuador Peru and Bolivia but soon after his second-in-command Antonio José de Sucre was appointed president of Bolivia. Bolívar aimed at a strong and united Spanish America able to cope not only with the threats emanating from Spain and the European Holy Alliance but also with the emerging power of the United States. This time he studied the southern provinces of Russia especially the steppes near the Caspian Sea the northern Caucasus the Crimea and the Black Sea. Although Pallas published an extensive account in German of his second expedition in 1799-1801 it never gained as much attention as the first expedition to Russia and Siberia 1768-1774. The present work is the French translation of this German account. In this account of his travel to South Russia the Crimea and the Black Sea Pallas not only describes his route through the Russian Empire he also - as a geologist and naturalist - gives an excellent physical and topographical description of the landscape. He notes the differences in the landscapes he faces along his way not only differences in nature but also how these Crimean landscapes have historically changed over years. He describes their historical geological changes based on fossils and antiquities he finds. He also discusses the flora fauna and climatology of the area. Next to this he gives a more cultural and anthropological description of South Russia and the Crimea. He gives his own remarks on the Crimean peoples economy and trade. With a bookplate on the front paste-downs of all volumes. 1789ref. 168579Paris: Maradan 1789-93. The celebrated French translation in the original boards First edition in French. First published in German this is the account of Pallas's expedition across the central Russian provinces from 1768 to 1774. He reported on the passage of Venus brought back numerous animal and plant specimens and made anthropological observations of local peoples. Simon Peter Pallas 1741-1811 was a German zoologist and botanist and a leading figure in the Russian scientific enlightenment. He was educated at Halle Göttingen and at Leiden where he submitted his doctorate in 1760. After a trip to England to study natural history and geology Pallas settled at The Hague where he published the acclaimed Elenchus zoophytorum and Miscellanea zoologica. He soon attracted the attention of Catherine the Great who invited him to St Petersburg where he became a professor of natural history at the Imperial Academy of Sciences. In 1768 at the specific request of the tsarina he was placed in charge of an expedition of five naturalists and seven astronomers into Russia and Siberia. Over the next six years the party traversed the empire from the plains of European Russia to the borders of Mongolia. "Pallas arrived back in St Petersburg in July 1774 with a vast amount of data and many fossil specimens but broken in health. His hair was whitened with fatigue and nearly all of his companions had died. His journals had been regularly despatched back to St Petersburg and were awaiting him on his arrival" Howgego. His chief geological contribution was the recognition of the temporal sequence of rocks from the centre to the flanks of a range. He also found a wide distribution of mammoth and rhinoceros fossils in the Siberian ice. This work was originally published in German in the period 1771-76. This French edition includes additional material covering the findings of the natural historians Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin Ivan Ivanovich Lepekhin and Johann Gottlieb Georgi.

The present work deals with the medicinal properties of various substances and is considered one of Paulli's most important contributions to the field of medicine. In the preface to Flora Danica Simon Paulli writes that the plant descriptions are drawn from Dodoens but organized into four groups based on the flowering time. One might think that this was meant as a simple and understandable system for laypeople but the system was not specifically created for this work. In Flora Danica Paulli employed a classification that he had already developed and presented in the present work the same year he arrived in Copenhagen. Since Simon Paulli originally wrote Flora Danica in Latin and had it translated with the help of a Danish student it is reasonable to assume that he drew much of the material directly from this book. See Bjerke “De Lærdeste Lægers Urtegaarde”. Simon Paulli 1603–1680 was a Danish physician and naturalist and made significant contributions to the fields of medicine and botany during the 17th century. Paulli was born in Rostock Germany and later moved to Denmark. He served as a professor of medicine at the University of Copenhagen and became the personal physician to King Christian IV of Denmark. In the botanical realm Paulli is particularly known for his work "Flora Danica". Published in the mid-17th century "Flora Danica" was one of the earliest works of its kind and contributed to the scientific understanding of plant life in Denmark. Apart from his botanical contributions Simon Paulli made important strides in the field of medicine and he is recognized for his studies on human anatomy. ref. 77255Berlin Gerty Simon unpublished ca. 1935. Original photograph 21.3 x 17.8 cm on original cardboard mount 25.0 x 21.0 cm. = Gertrud "Gerty" Simon 1887-1970 was a German photographer who worked during the interwar period. "Born Gertrud Cohn in Bremen to a well-to-do Jewish family with her father being a lawyer she practiced in Berlin and later in London. She captured many important political and artistic figures in Weimar Berlin including singer and actress Lotte Lenya her husband composer Kurt Weill sculptor painter and print maker Käthe Kollwitz her colleague Max Liebermann and physicist Albert Einstein. Gerty Simon moved to Berlin after the First World War. Her husband Wilhelm like her father was a lawyer. They had one son Bernard Bernd born in 1921. Her Berlin studio was at Clausewitzstrasse. With the arrival of the Nazi Party in power in 1933 life became very difficult for Simon and her family. In 1933 her son's school the Landschulheim Herrlingen later the Bunce Court School a progressive boarding school transferred from Southern Germany to Otterden Kent. Simon followed while her husband remained in Berlin unable to continue as a lawyer and judge but finding work as a notary. The family was not reunited until 1939 and father and son were both imprisoned as enemy aliens. At 19 Bernard was even sent to an internment camp in Australia until 1942 despite having lived in the UK for seven years. Simon rapidly re-established her studio in Chelsea and portrayed many significant individuals there such as historian and broadcaster Sir Kenneth Clark actress Dame Peggy Ashcroft and politician Aneurin Bevan. She stopped working as a professional photographer from 1937 for unknown reasons" Wikipedia. The photo shows Einstein in suit and tie looking toward his left with a "Rembrandtesque" light falling on his right side. Signed i.e. approved outside the plate by the photographer. One of the lesser-known and very rare photographs of Einstein. Tiny chips to the left and upper edge and some surface damage to the outer right side; otherwise very good the impression fine and strong. A beautiful photograph.

A typed letter signed by binder Jeff Clements and a photocopied review of the Designer Bookbinders exhibit in which this binding appeared laid in. ◆In mint condition. Despite the vaguely unpleasant title this is a notable and obviously extremely limited artist's book offered here in a striking binding that is distinctly tall and narrow with design elements inspired by events in the text a dramatic dialogue between a "Shakespearean Superstar and his Understudy." According to the binder's letter to Professor John Burton the original purchaser of the binding "The design is very much based on the narrative itself with references to blindness as in the blind sun in white within the incised leather; the play takes place in a sewer also evident and the lower corner on the back cover is a hint about the mule which appears on the last pages of the play." Perhaps these plot elements are not as compelling as "King Lear" but they certainly are curious. Clements notes further that the binding was completed in 1981 and exhibited in a Designer Bookbinders show and he has enclosed a copy of a review of that show underlining the portion where the critic compares this binding to the paintings of British artists William Scott and Ben Nicholson. Clements 1934-2021 studied at the Plymouth College of Art and Design receiving the National Diploma in Design in 1955 and continued his education in bookbinding at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. He became a fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 1957 and served as the organization's president from 1981 to 1983. Since 1988 he has been based in Amsterdam where he operates Binderij Meridiaan with Katinka Keus. British-American artist Natalia or Natalie d'Abeloff is a painter printmaker book-artist cartoonist and teacher but is best known for her livres d'artiste copies of which are held by institutions including the Rijksmuseum the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Library of Congress. The present work represents an early venture into multimedia works an area she has continued to explore in the digital age creating a "Bloggers' Parliament" and authoring a popular web comic. Jerry Jenkins Curator of Contemporary British Published Collections at the British Library notes the many ways the various elements of Abeloff's books--paper print illustrations--and the techniques she employs give her works appeal to a number of senses on a number of levels. With "Fungus and Curmudgeonly" he was impressed by the impact of being able to follow the text while hearing actors perform the roles noting that "this offers an aural immersion into the play along with the performance." She is a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and her papers are held by the V&A. NdA Press unknown
