Xiamen e' una citta' sull'omonima isola rocciosa, collegata alla Cina sud-orientale da un'autostrada e due ponti: a una baia "disseminata di imbarcazioni e sfavillii erratici" fa da controcanto un agglomerato industriale fitto di immigrati "irregolari e affamati". Qui per lungo tempo ha spadroneggiato Lai Changxing, il tycoon che prima di diventare "il latitante piu' ricercato della Cina" e' stato il piu' famoso tra i nuovi ricchi del post-maoismo, di volta in volta definito come un semplice tofei ("bandito", anche se in senso non dispregiativo) o come un Robin Hood dispensatore di lavoro. E qui si insedia, alla fine degli anni Novanta, il giovane corrispondente del "Times" Oliver August, per il quale Lai e' l'emblema di una Cina con il piede in due staffe, che incoraggia i cittadini "ad agire sempre piu' liberamente, ma senza garantire che il loro operato rientri nella legalita". L'indagine-inseguimento nei luoghi dell'infanzia e dell'ascesa di Lai diventa allora un impressionante succedersi di "visioni" rivelatrici: 1'"obitorio umano" di Beihai e' la quintessenza di tutte le aree depresse; e la stessa Xiamen sembra il concentrato di un'interminabile transizione

Dans quelle mesure celles-ci contribuent-elles à l'organisation du temps quotidien et des calendriers ? Dans quelle mesure sont-elles, en retour, réglées par les contraintes du temps ? On ne peut répondre à ces questions sans embrasser la diversité anthropologique, historique et sociale des conceptions et des usages du temps. Les études réunies dans ce volume invitent à des approches croisées : par exemple entre le temps des consommateurs et celui des producteurs, entre le temps des cultures sans horloge et le temps des sociétés hyperponctuelles, entre les civilisations qui associent temps linéaire et temps cyclique et celles qui ne croient qu'à un seul temps. Traiter du temps sous l'angle de l'alimentation aide, en spécifiant une notion spontanément concédée à la physique et à la philosophie, à la faire entrer dans le champ des sciences humaines
