Xiamen e' una citta' sull'omonima isola rocciosa, collegata alla Cina sud-orientale da un'autostrada e due ponti: a una baia "disseminata di imbarcazioni e sfavillii erratici" fa da controcanto un agglomerato industriale fitto di immigrati "irregolari e affamati". Qui per lungo tempo ha spadroneggiato Lai Changxing, il tycoon che prima di diventare "il latitante piu' ricercato della Cina" e' stato il piu' famoso tra i nuovi ricchi del post-maoismo, di volta in volta definito come un semplice tofei ("bandito", anche se in senso non dispregiativo) o come un Robin Hood dispensatore di lavoro. E qui si insedia, alla fine degli anni Novanta, il giovane corrispondente del "Times" Oliver August, per il quale Lai e' l'emblema di una Cina con il piede in due staffe, che incoraggia i cittadini "ad agire sempre piu' liberamente, ma senza garantire che il loro operato rientri nella legalita".
