"Feng Zhengjie, whose work appears on the cover of 2005's China: The New Contemporary Painting, represents international trends toward borrowing and riffing on bygone styles -and the return to painterly technique - as much as he does his country's blooming contemporary art scene. His sources include posters of Shanghai in the 1930s and contemporary wedding photography, and the bright, streamlined style with which he addresses their conventions has the look of polished fashion imagery, an airbrushed 1980s feeling that's gotten increasingly eerie in recent years as his subjects' irises and pupils have shrunk to little dots on largely white eyes, giving them a glassy, doll-like look. Eleonora Battiston writes, 'Their eyes change and follow the artist's transformations.year by year, with different thoughts, looking towards and within his country's history and culture." "Questi manifesti benaugurali appaiono nel XVI secolo come forma artistica popolare, hanno colori sgargianti e ritraggono scene storiche, leggendarie, folkloristiche e di vita quotidiana. Questa forma d'arte si sviluppa poi nel corso dei secoli, tocca il suo culmine sotto la dinastia Qing e successivamente si accosta ad altri tipi di manifesti pubblicitari e di propaganda politica. Il maoismo diventa "pop" e attraverso l'interpretazione di Feng Zhengjie le figure assumono un che di kitch e di grottesco. Basta poco a far sorridere queste persone, l'illusione di un "viaggio romantico" immortalato da uno scatto fotografico in una posa plastica e ancora una volta finta. Il tempo passa, le fasi storiche si susseguono e con sguardo critico Feng Zhengjie ne segue le evoluzioni. Sembra uno studio sociologico il suo, un'indagine il cui risultato puo' essere la constatazione di quanto gli uomini stiano diventando sempre piu' superficiali. La bidimensionalita' dei suoi ritratti allude a quanto poco spessore ci sia dietro ad ogni essere umano. La societa' capitalista punta sull'apparenza, su un bell'aspetto e su forme perfette. All'edonismo esasperato, pero', fa da controparte il vuoto interiore, la mancanza di ideali, sentimenti autentici e personalita'. I soggetti dell'artista diventano negli ultimi anni esclusivamente femminili, splendide donne dalla spiccata sensualita', simili nei colori e semplici nelle forme, ma ognuna unica e distinta dalle altre grazie a una bellezza perfetta nella mutevole variabilita' dei dettagli. Protagoniste in primo piano sono le labbra, gli sguardi distorti come se non sapessero piu' dove guardare e le cappigliature mai uguali a se stesse. ".
