All these elements appear in the novels and their placement firmly in the myth-shrouded past combine to produce a kind of 'cultural euphoria' in Chinese readers that cannot be found anywhere else in modern Chinese literature."--John Minford. ; in multicolored pictorial dustjackets with classic watercolor scenes color-coded by novel and stiff paper wrappers ; text in Chinese with many illustrations; Paginations: Bi xue jian 2 v. 4 828 p. : ill. ; 21 cm.; Series: Jin Yong zuo pin ji ; 3-4 ISBN: 7108006677; 9787108006677 ; LCCN:2007-556539 ; OCLC: 32447936 -- Shen diao xia lu 4 v. 4 1564 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. ; Series: Jin Yong zuo pin ji ; 9-12 ISBN: 7108006669 set; 9787108006660 set ; LCCN: 2007-556538 ; OCLC: 32447953 -- Xue shan fei hu 4 394 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. ; Series: Jin Yong zuo pin ji ; 13 ; ISBN: 7108006642; 9787108006646 ; LCCN:2007-558748 ; OCLC: 32752984 -- Fei hu wai zhuan 2 v. 4 726 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. ; Series: Jin Yong zuo pin ji ; 14-15 ISBN: 7108006650; 9787108006653 ; LCCN:2007-558749 ; OCLC: 32752899 -- Yi tian tu long ji 4 v. 4 1594 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. 8vo, paperback, pp.246. In this compelling new study, Louise Edwards explores the lives of some of China's most famous women warriors and wartime spies through history. Focusing on key figures including Hua Mulan, Zheng Pingru and Liu Hulan, this book examines the ways in which these extraordinary women have been commemorated through a range of cultural mediums including film, theatre, museums and textbooks. Whether perceived as heroes or anti-heroes, Edwards shows that both the popular and official presentation of these women and their accomplishments has evolved in line with China's shifting political values and circumstances over the past one hundred years. Written in a lively and accessible style with illustrations throughout, this book sheds new light on the relationship between gender and militarisation and the ways that women have been exploited to glamorise war both historically in the past and in China today.

1970réf. 153821970. Two American radical pamphlets on women in post-revolutionary China issued during the 1970s by the International Socialists and the October League Marxist-Leninist document sharply different Marxist assessments of Chinese Communist claims for women's emancipation. The International Socialists pamphlet argues that gains in women's employment and public participation remained subordinate to industrial production state-building and the political priorities of the Chinese Communist Party. The October League pamphlet presents women's liberation from a Marxist-Leninist perspective sympathetic to revolutionary China illustrating women participating in labor and International Women's Day demonstrations. The pair records competing positions within the American revolutionary left over China women's labor socialism and the meaning of emancipation during the decade following the Cultural Revolution. Two illustrated and textual pamphlets published in Highland Park and Chicago during the 1970s comprising 65 pages. The Liberation of Women in China issued by the International Socialists contains 49 pages with tables and footnotes and develops a sustained critique of women's status under Chinese Communism. The October League publication comprises 16 pages and is illustrated with black-and-white photographs showing women at work and participants in Women's Day marches. Both organizations used developments in China to address American readers engaged with Marxism revolutionary politics and women's liberation but reached markedly different conclusions about the relationship between socialist revolution and gender equality. 1 International Socialists. The Liberation of Women in China. Highland Park: International Socialists n.d. circa 1970s. 49 pages. Original printed wrappers 5.5 × 8.5 inches; tables and footnotes. The pamphlet disputes Chinese Communist claims of achieved women's emancipation arguing that women's advancement remained conditioned by the state's requirements for industrialization and production. Its statistical tables and cited sources place questions of employment domestic labor and political equality within a broader socialist critique of the Chinese state. 2 October League Marxist-Leninist. Women's Liberation: A Communist View. Chicago: October League 1976. 16 pages 5.5 × 8.5 inches illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Images show women performing workplace tasks and participants in Women's Day marches linking the organization's discussion of women's liberation to labor anti-imperialism and revolutionary politics. Published in the year of Mao Zedong's death the pamphlet records the October League's engagement with China while American Marxist organizations were debating the political legacy of the Cultural Revolution and the direction of Chinese Communism. Mild wear to wrappers; overall good condition. The two publications preserve opposing arguments circulated by American Marxist organizations over whether revolutionary China had achieved women's emancipation or subordinated it to economic and state priorities. unknown books
