réf. FRE34Oblong 4to 270 × 370 mm. 10â… x 14â… in. Contemporary cloth album with 27 stiff card leaves containing 272 original gelatin silver photographs approximately one quarter captioned in white ink ca. 1919-1921. Photographs range in size from 17 × 22.5 cm 6¾ x 8⅞ in. to 6.5 × 4 cm 2½ x 1½ in. the majority measuring approximately 10.5 × 8 cm 4⅛ x 3⅛ in. Album's corners bumped. Approximately a dozen photographs somewhat faded; several captions lightly faded but remaining legible. Otherwise in very good condition. The album opens with the only studio portrait depicting a sitter wearing elaborate Persian dress with a large veil and richly embroidered garments. Numbered "1591 " in the negative the photograph was likely produced by one of Tehran's photographic studios of the period possibly that of Antoin Sevruguin or one of his contemporaries. The album was almost certainly compiled by a British diplomat attached to the British Legation in Tehran during the period when Sir Percy Cox served as Acting British Minister in Persia 1919-1921. Formerly Political Resident in the Persian Gulf Cox returned to Tehran following the First World War to oversee British policy in Persia and negotiate the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919. Although the compiler appears repeatedly throughout the album he is never shown in military uniform suggesting that he belonged to the diplomatic rather than military establishment. The album contains numerous photographs of the British Legation its personnel official receptions and gatherings of British diplomats with Persian officials and senior officers of the Persian Cossack Brigade. Among the individuals identified in the captions are Sir Percy Cox Colonel Haig General Westdahl the Russian General Nikolai Staroselsky together with Persian dignitaries identified as Seyyid Zia Sultan Ali and Haji Ahmad. Several large group photographs show British diplomatic staff standing alongside Persian ministers and officers of the Cossack Brigade during official ceremonies. Included are several photographs of General Nikolai Staroselsky commander of the Persian Cossack Brigade from 1918 until 1920. He appears informally on the photograph smiling next to Thomas Wolseley Haig British Consul-General in Tehran in 1919. Photograph was almost certainly taken only a short time before the political changes of 1920 when British policy shifted in favour of reorganizing the Brigade under Persian leadership ending Staroselsky's command and paving the way for the rise of Reza Khan. The album records many aspects of public and ceremonial life in Tehran including celebrations of Nowruz decorated temporary ceremonial gateways erected for the festivities official receptions military reviews and an extensive series devoted to the Ashura commemorations. Eighteen photographs depict processions devotional performances self-flagellation and scenes of tatbir providing an unusually detailed visual record of Shi'a religious observances in early twentieth-century Persia. A substantial portion of the album documents travel beyond Tehran. The compiler photographed Qom including panoramic views of the Shrine of Fatima Masumeh richly tiled Safavid and Qajar entrance portals shrine courtyards caravanserais crowded with camel caravans and the surrounding cemetery and pilgrimage quarter. Other photographs record Cheshmeh-'Ali near Rey and its celebrated Sasanian rock reliefs Isfahan Afche mountain villages bridges and numerous examples of Persian Islamic architecture ranging from monumental shrine complexes and mosques to village imamzadehs and isolated domed sanctuaries. The album also contains a substantial group of photographs documenting vernacular architecture and temporary structures. Among them are ceremonial arches erected for public celebrations in Tehran roadside caravanserais rural shrines associated with ancient trees village houses stone bridges etc. Together these photographs illustrate both monumental and everyday architecture in Persia during the closing years of the Qajar period. Another extensive section follows a sporting expedition through northern and western Persia apparently in the vicinity of Mount Damavand and the Alborz Mountains. The photographs depict tented camps mule caravans mountain guides shepherds hunters village children remote settlements river valleys and dramatic mountain scenery. Wildlife photographs include hunting trophies of wild sheep and a Persian leopard while ethnographic studies portray local inhabitants in traditional dress. One sequence records a remote rural shrine centred on an ancient tree while others show isolated mosques domed sanctuaries caravan halts and villages situated in narrow mountain valleys. Numerous landscape views including a striking panorama of Mount Damavand further document the compiler's journey through the Iranian interior. The album provides a broad photographic survey of Persia during the immediate post-First World War period combining British diplomatic life high-ranking Persian and foreign officials the Persian Cossack Brigade religious festivals archaeological monuments Islamic architecture mountain travel ethnographic subjects and sporting expeditions in a single contemporary record. hardcover

réf. PF48Fourteen loose original albumen photographs ca. 171x123 cm 6 ¾ x 4 ¾ in mounted on ornamented cardboards. All photos with period Russian captions on the verso. Photos housed in a folder. Light soiling of the cardboards photos age-toned several photographs with small stains but overall a very good collection of strong interesting photos. Historically important collection of professional albumen photographs mostly documenting Mashhad Iran in the late 19th century and before the 1912 bombardment of the city. At the time Mashhad was a major political and commercial center under the Qajar dynasty. Owing to its proximity to Afghanistan and Russian Central Asia the city became a focal point of the Great Game between Britain and Russia. Following the establishment of the Russian consulate in Mashhad 1889 Russian consular guards Cossack escorts and military advisers appeared in the city to protect Russian subjects. In 1912 amid anti-Russian protests Russian Cossack forces heavily bombarded the city heavily damaging the Imam Reza Holy shrine complex and surrounding areas. As follows from the captions the photographer was of Russian origin and was likely on assignment related to the military interests of the empire in the region. The stiff ornamental mounts suggest that the photos were produced for official or presentation purposes possibly intended for consular archives a government report or as a gift to a high-ranking official. The collection contains 14 photographs of mostly Mashhad including four well-executed early views of the pre-bombarded Imam Reza Holy Shrine. The images show a general view of the crowded shrine the arch and courtyard with horses and an archway guarded by armed soldiers. Another important photo depicts the interior of the nearby Gawhar-Shad Mosque with three Russian soldiers posing on the pulpit. Especially interesting is an image of the British Consulate entrance established in the city in 1889 The consulate was closed in 1911 following the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 which divided Persia into spheres of influence. Despite thorough research no other photographs of the consulate have been found online. Other identified photographs from Mashhad include the Persian artillery barracks with cannons in the yard and the entrance to the governor’s palace showing a dozen militaries and civilians posing for the photo. The collection also includes at least two photographs from Afghanistan depicting the crowded “Tehran Gate” with locals in traditional attire passing through and the “New Afghan Gate” with armed soldiers facing the camera. Among four unidentified photographs are “Igda” possibly “Eedgah” Kandahar Aghanistan “Kochan” possibly Kashan Iran the “Ergov” gates and the “Bank Gates” with Kazak soldiers guarding the entrance. Overall historically important collection of professional albumen photographs mostly documenting Mashhad Iran in the late 19th century and before the 1912 bombardment of the city. hardcover
