1900réf. 152801900. Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar albumen photograph in royal carriage circa 1900-1902 documents the Iranian monarch during one of the European journeys that placed Qajar sovereignty within the diplomatic and ceremonial world of the great imperial powers. Mozaffar ad-Din Shah ruled Iran from 1896 until 1907 during a period when Britain and Russia competed aggressively for political and economic influence in Persia while the Qajar state faced mounting debt foreign concessions and domestic demands for reform. His European tours therefore carried significance beyond royal spectacle presenting the Shah as an independent sovereign even as Iran increasingly operated within the pressures of European imperial rivalry. The approximately 9 by 11.5 inch photograph shows the Shah seated in uniform in a horse-drawn carriage with another passenger accompanied by a mounted military escort and watched by spectators in a European urban setting. The carriage uniforms horses and formal procession employ the visual language of European monarchy and imperial ceremony illustrating how Qajar rulers adopted international forms of royal display while attempting to assert Iran's status among more powerful states. The image likely dates from the Shah's 1900 or 1902 European tours; the precise location remains unidentified. These journeys occurred against the backdrop of the so-called Great Game in which Russia and Britain sought strategic and commercial advantages in Iran and Central Asia. Foreign loans and concessions helped finance the Qajar court and royal travel but also intensified Iranian resentment toward foreign intervention and monarchical dependence. Within only a few years these pressures contributed to the Persian Constitutional Revolution of 1905-1907. Mozaffar ad-Din Shah ultimately approved the electoral law and constitution of 1906 establishing the Majlis and beginning Iran's transition away from unchecked royal authority. A substantial period photograph linking Qajar kingship European imperialism Anglo-Russian influence in Persia diplomatic spectacle and the political conditions preceding the Iranian Constitutional Revolution. unknown
1943réf. 144361943. Photograph archive Iran World War II circa 1943 documents the presence of American military personnel in southwestern Iran during the operation of the Allied supply route known as the Persian Corridor a critical logistical network used to transport materiel to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease agreements. Concentrated in Andimeshk and Dezful in Khuzestan province the images record activity along a strategic rail and road corridor linking Tehran to the Persian Gulf where American and British forces coordinated the movement of supplies to support the Eastern Front. The photographs provide direct visual evidence of U.S. military operations in Iran a theater central to Allied logistics but comparatively underrepresented in visual archives of the war and support research into wartime infrastructure Middle Eastern geography and U.S. military presence outside primary combat zones. Archive consists of 44 black and white silver gelatin photographs most measuring approximately 3.5" x 2.5" depicting scenes in Andimeshk and Dezful Iran circa 1943. The images include architectural views desert and garden landscapes transportation corridors and interactions between American soldiers and local Iranian civilians. Several photographs document the built environment of the Zagros Mountain foothill region including rail lines and roadways integral to wartime supply movement. Additional views capture villages and urban spaces within Khuzestan with identifiable regional markers such as proximity to Shush and the Tehran-Ahvaz transit route. The grouping presents a coherent visual record of a specific geographic zone tied directly to Allied logistical operations. Taken during the height of Allied coordination in Iran following the 1941 Anglo-Soviet occupation these photographs situate American personnel within a broader multinational effort to sustain Soviet resistance against German advances. The region's long habitation history extending from ancient Persian and Sasanian periods contrasts with its wartime transformation into a modern supply corridor underscoring the layering of military infrastructure onto historically significant terrain. Visual documentation of Andimeshk and Dezful during this period remains comparatively scarce particularly in relation to U.S. personnel activity making the archive relevant for studies of global wartime mobility cross-cultural contact and the material realities of logistics-based warfare. Light edge wear and minor soiling; images generally clean and well-defined; overall in very good condition. unknown
1841réf. 144651841. Debeux Louis. La Perse 1841. Original steel engraving depicting inhabitants of Mazandaran the northern Iranian region bordering the Caspian Sea published during the reign of Mohammad Shah Qajar 1834-1848. The illustration belongs to the nineteenth-century French tradition of geographical and ethnographic publications which introduced European audiences to the peoples regional customs and landscapes of Persia. Mazandaran occupied a distinctive position within Qajar Iran separated from much of the Iranian plateau by the Alborz Mountains and characterized by its fertile Caspian coastal lowlands agricultural settlements and regional cultural traditions. Debeux Louis. La Perse. Paris: Firmin Didot Frères 1841. Original steel engraving approximately 5.5" x 8.5". Published as an illustration to Debeux's French-language account of Persia the plate depicts inhabitants of the Mazandaran region. The engraving belongs to a larger illustrated publication addressing Persian geography history and society including the regional distinctions of the Qajar kingdom. Mazandaran was closely associated with the Qajar dynasty whose origins lay in northern Iran and whose rulers maintained political and dynastic connections with the Caspian provinces. During the nineteenth century French geographical publications introduced European readers to areas of Persia beyond the royal capital of Tehran and the better-known cities of Isfahan and Shiraz. Debeux's illustration records the contemporary European portrayal of a northern Iranian population during the Qajar period. General age-related toning; otherwise in very good condition. unknown
1720réf. 143601720. Atlas historique engraving of Persian costume and customs 1720 records an early eighteenth-century European presentation of dress military equipment horsemanship and tobacco use in Persia during the late Safavid period. Rather than presenting a single landscape or event the plate assembles male and female costume hairstyles turbans footwear weapons armor horses and smoking implements into a comparative visual survey. Its attention to cavalry equipment and what the accompanying description calls the "militia and their weapons" and the "offensive and defensive" equipment worn by soldiers at war documents the categories through which European geographical publications described Persian society and military culture. Atlas historique. Description of Persia and Persian costumes. 1720. Sheet size 51 x 43 cm. The engraving contains numerous individual figures and objects arranged for comparison including four men in different Persian costumes women in period dress examples of female hairstyles turbans and shoes and representations of tobacco smoking and pipes including a hookah. Military subjects include armor weapons cavalry horses an elaborate bow and equestrian equipment. The combination of human figures with separately illustrated articles of clothing arms and personal equipment allows individual elements of Persian dress and material culture to be examined across the sheet. Published in 1720 the engraving dates to the final years of Safavid rule when European atlases and geographical compilations increasingly combined maps with images and written accounts of the peoples clothing military practices and customs of regions beyond Europe. Here Persian men and women cavalry weapons tobacco consumption and dress are organized as subjects of geographical and ethnographic description providing evidence of how Persia was visually classified for an early eighteenth-century European audience. The detailed renderings of costume armor weapons horses hairstyles and smoking implements also preserve period representations of material culture associated with Safavid Persia. Very good condition. unknown

This group is not to be confused with the Organization of Iranian People's Fedai Guerrillas from which the IPFG split in 1979 citing the former's lack of dedication to the principles of armed struggle. The magazine's contents are a combination of attacks on Iran's "imperialist" Islamic regime and on the foreign policy of the United States which the organization blames for laying the foundation for the Islamic revolution beginning with the CIA coup of 1953. A rare publication from a key period in modern Iranian history before the Islamic Republic had irrevocably consolidated power. Vents constitutes the second major part of Perse's American output after his Exile cycle. This is one of Perse's most significant poems. It was initially published only in a deluxe large format large print edition a limited and entirely numbered print run. Saint-John Perse was the pen name of Alexis Leger 1887–1975. He had parallel lives as a poet and as a diplomat. Dismissed from service in France during the war for his Anti-Nazi views he went into exile in America returning after the war. To the Anglo Saxons he is often best known as the author of Anabasis which T.S. Eliot translated in 1924. His poetry is often taught as a bridge between late Symbolism and the more expansive world-embracing modernism of figures like Eliot and Whitman. Unpaginated. 32.5cm x 25cm. 325 cm x 25 cm. Perse was dismissed from his post by the Vichy government in 1940 stripped of his French nationality and forced into exile in the United States. After producing some early work he then focussed on his diplomatic career. This was his first work on his return to poetry. Perse's work was admired by literary contemporaries such as Paul Claudel André Gide and André Breton who viewed him as a "surrealist at a distance." Particularly interesting for the English reader is the relationship Perse had with T.S. Eliot. .
