Best.-Nr. 121987Christmas Island Royal Army Educational Corps May 15 1957. . 2-leaf mimeographed broadside wire-stitched 33.5 x 20.5 cm text printed in red and black slight rusting from the staple excellent condition. A rare newsletter celebrating the supposed detonation of Britain's first hydrogen bomb as part of Operation Grapple in the Christmas Islands during 1957. The text describes the preparation the event itself and the Valiant XD 818 used to drop the bomb. Task Force Commander Air Vice Marshall W.E. Oulton and Scientific Director W.R.J. Cook are profiled. 'In MayJune 1957 the first three Grapple tests were held at Malden Island codenamed Grapple 1 Short Granite Grapple 2 Orange Herald and Grapple 3 Purple Granite. The nuclear devices were detonated high over the ocean after being dropped from a Valiant bomber. After the three tests the British Government falsely stated that it had achieved a thermonuclear explosion in the megaton range. The MidPacific News - a newsletter produced for staff and troops on Christmas Island - reported: 'Bomb Gone! H-Bomb puts Britain on level terms' Maclellan Grappling with the Bomb: Britain's Pacific H-Bomb Tests p. 2 2017. It was quickly determined that none of the detonations had actually reached 1 megaton but Grapple X in November of the following year achieved this. FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR -The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this decorative map of Tahiti and Moorea, with the Marquesas shown in an inset. The map is filled with native names for regions on the island, with information taken from Captain Cook's explorations of the islands. A peaceful landscape scene with natives lounging on the shore accents the cartouche. Published in: Nuovo atlante geografico universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni. Roma, Calcografia camerale, 1792-1801.Cassini was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, some foxing, otherwise in very good condition.

First edition thus of exceedingly scarce & well-illustrated architectural catalogue for this noted Portland OR based manufacturer of ready-to-assemble homes intending to draw upon local timber as well as trim shipping costs on the West Coast to compete with Sears Pacific Ready-Cut HomesMontgomery Ward and other companies entering the market. These well-designed Pacific Northwest bungalows replaced the fancy Victorians in many western neighborhoods and although most of the homes were one story they also sold garages barns wooden water tanks as well as all of the built-in cabinetry and wood trims. The Fenner homes were delivered in bundles of material all clearly marked ready to assemble and with the instructions could be built by a novice but Fenner does mention that hiring a builder or contractor will still result in considerable cost-savings.The Redi Built House Co. was incorporated in May 1911 by J.H. Fenner F.C. Knapp president of the Peninsula Lumber Co. and James E. Brockway as secretary and treasurer. The numbering was directly related to the date issued so Catalogue No. 15 was issued in 1915 and by 1916 the company was expanding across the country. They were very popular in the fast expanding Ladd Addition and other old Portland neighborhoods as prospective buyers from 1911-1927 could visit their offices and sit down with and devise custom house plans to suit individual tastes. U.S. Naval Missile Center Authors and Editors Handbook 1961 establishes standardized authorship formatting and editorial control for technical reports produced at the Pacific Missile Range documenting the internal communication systems that supported U.S. guided missile and early satellite programs during the Cold War. Issued for personnel at Point Mugu California the manual defines procedures for drafting reviewing and disseminating classified and technical material tied to weapons development providing direct evidence of how military knowledge was structured codified and circulated within federal defense infrastructure. The inclusion of a contemporaneous typescript insert History of the Pacific Missile Range February 1961 further situates the handbook within active missile testing and space recovery operations supporting research into Cold War science military bureaucracy and the integration of documentation practices into weapons development. Pacific Missile Range and U.S. Naval Missile Center. Authors and Editors Handbook. Point Mugu CA: U.S. Naval Missile Center 1 August 1961. First edition. Publication No. NMC-MP-61-9. Quarto format 218 pages with an additional 5-page typescript insert titled History of the Pacific Missile Range February 1961 issued by the Public Affairs Office. Three-hole-punched sheets bound with cloth tape and printed card wrappers. The handbook is organized into four sections: Report Preparation Manuscript Preparation Language Grammar and Punctuation and Matters of Style outlining requirements for technical clarity typographic consistency and standardized formatting across naval missile documentation. The inserted historical report traces the establishment of the Pacific Missile Range in 1957 under William Holaday and details its expansion into "an ocean-spanning instrumented network capable of supplying information on the launching guidance and impact of the nation's largest missiles and satellites." Documented events include "On 16 Dec 1958 the first REGULUS II missile was fired" and the recovery of "DISCOVERER XIII. making it the first man-made object ever recovered from orbit" providing a contemporaneous record of early U.S. missile and satellite operations. Produced during a period of rapid expansion in U.S. missile testing and space reconnaissance the manual demonstrates how technical writing standards were integrated into military systems to ensure uniformity precision and reliability in the production of strategic knowledge. References to parallel guides such as Guide for Air Force Writing and Preparation of Weapon-Test Reports indicate alignment across branches of the armed services in codifying technical communication. The Pacific Missile Range functioned as a central node in Cold War weapons testing linking launch sites tracking stations and recovery operations across the Pacific and the documentation practices outlined here formed part of the operational infrastructure supporting those activities. Chipping to spine tape light edge wear to wrappers and faint soiling to covers; interior clean and complete including all tables figures and inserted report. Overall very good condition. unknown
