First edition of this uncommon and complete photogravure art set filled with the remarkable images of Benjamin Gifford issued in conjunction with the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle WA. Gifford 1859-1936 is considered perhaps Oregon’s most famous photographer and his beautiful images included here depict a Brass Era automobile driving on Sandy Road to Mt. Hood; Forestry Building from the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition; Fish wheel on the Columbia River; Multnomah Falls; a sternwheeler steamship on the Columbia River; aftermath of Mt. Hood forest fire; Birds-eye view of the Lewis & Clark Exposition grounds; three views of Celilo Falls including two of Native Americans fishing; downtown Portland OR and others. Many of the photogravures also depict the Deschutes River the Rogue River Valley Mount Washington log rafts on the Columbia River and Latourelle Falls. Gifford first worked in Portland until 1895 then opened a studio in The Dalles and later returned to Portland in 1910 where he continued to operate both studios until about 1920. Later his son Ralph I. Gifford took over operation of the studio and continued to operate the business. Williams 1823-1910 served as chief justice of the Oregon Territory Supreme Court delegate to the statehood constitutional convention was a key figure in his ruling that slavery was not legal in Oregon and later aggressively prosecuted cases against the Klu Klux Klan for President Grant. Although he served as mayor from 1902-1905 his tenure during the Lewis & Clark Exposition featured considerable police and political corruption and failed to stem either gambling or prostitution in the City. Walter D. Harney b. 1869 was a noted newspaper and magazine publisher in Oshkosh and Racine Wisconsin who published several of these promotional works on Oregon Spokane and Tacoma eventually moving to King County before World War I himself. These could either be purchased originally in fascicles or all nine bound together in full calf binding which is the much more common appearance of the set. There are variations in the Gifford photos featured in individual sets. W.D. Harney Photogravure Publisher; [The Lakeside Press, R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co.], paperback

réf. MB54Four Oblong Folio album leaves. With five mounted watercolours each ca. 16x29 cm 6 ½ x 11 ½ in or slightly smaller four with period pencil captions on mounts. Mounts with a couple of minor marginal tears but otherwise a very good collection. An attractive collection of lively watercolours of colonial Australia and Tasmania. Two views captioned “Lake Midgeon Wagga Wagga” and “Same” most likely depict the banks of the Murrumbidgee River and Wollundry Lagoon in the centre of Wagga Wagga town Riverina region of New South Wales. The wooden pedestrian bridge on one of the drawings looks similar to the one built over the Wollundry Lagoon in 1874 by a local architect Charles Redman and replaced in 1920 and then again in 1962 see more. The homestead on the left possibly stands on the site of modern-day Victory Memorial Gardens in Wagga Wagga. The other possibility is that the watercolours show Lake Mejum now Mejum Swamp northeast of Narrandera Riverina region 95 km northwest of Wagga Wagga. The watercolour view of the famous Botany Bay in Sydney features a steamship moored at a pier. The drawing of the Tamar River in Tasmania actually the estuary of the North Esk and South Esk Rivers flowing into the Bass Strait near George Town shows a steam and sail ships meeting at the estuary’s bend with distant hills in the background. Overall a nice collection of early original watercolours of Australia and Tasmania. A list of pencil captions: Botany Bay; Lake Midgeon Wagga Wagga; Same; Tamar River Tasmania. unknown

FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR -The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this decorative map of Tahiti and Moorea, with the Marquesas shown in an inset. The map is filled with native names for regions on the island, with information taken from Captain Cook's explorations of the islands. A peaceful landscape scene with natives lounging on the shore accents the cartouche. Published in: Nuovo atlante geografico universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni. Roma, Calcografia camerale, 1792-1801.Cassini was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, some foxing, otherwise in very good condition.

First edition thus of exceedingly scarce & well-illustrated architectural catalogue for this noted Portland OR based manufacturer of ready-to-assemble homes intending to draw upon local timber as well as trim shipping costs on the West Coast to compete with Sears Pacific Ready-Cut HomesMontgomery Ward and other companies entering the market. These well-designed Pacific Northwest bungalows replaced the fancy Victorians in many western neighborhoods and although most of the homes were one story they also sold garages barns wooden water tanks as well as all of the built-in cabinetry and wood trims. The Fenner homes were delivered in bundles of material all clearly marked ready to assemble and with the instructions could be built by a novice but Fenner does mention that hiring a builder or contractor will still result in considerable cost-savings.The Redi Built House Co. was incorporated in May 1911 by J.H. Fenner F.C. Knapp president of the Peninsula Lumber Co. and James E. Brockway as secretary and treasurer. The numbering was directly related to the date issued so Catalogue No. 15 was issued in 1915 and by 1916 the company was expanding across the country. They were very popular in the fast expanding Ladd Addition and other old Portland neighborhoods as prospective buyers from 1911-1927 could visit their offices and sit down with and devise custom house plans to suit individual tastes. Today Fenner homes can be found in many older Portland and other Pacific Northwest city neighborhoods.
