réf. 58420 Mule Team Borax--Where it Comes From what it is Good for and How to Use it Pacific Coast Borax Company New York Chicago Oakland circa 1895 32pp. 4 3/8 x 6 3/4 inches. Staple-bound white pictorial wrappers with ads on front and back for 20 Mule Team Borax products. Light soiling and edge wear. Interior pages lightly toned but clean. Very Good Condition. Rare little advertising booklet for 20 Mule Team Borax brand of products. The title page states "This new work contains a series of Remarkable Photographs of The Borax Mines in Death Valley. The first ever reproduced in a booklet for popular distribution." The 20 Mule Team symbol was first used on Borax products in 1891 ironically after a rail line began transporting borax. 20 mule teams were originally used to move borax out of the hot stinkin' desert. 20 Mule Team Borax is still in production. We find one copy of this ephemeral pamphlet at University of California Santa Barbara as of June 2023 although it should be noted that slight variations in title entry may result in additional copies showing up in OCLC. Nonetheless we find no copies in commerce. unknown

The Indochina refugee crisis was the large outflow of people from the former French colonies of Indochina comprising the countries of Vietnam Cambodia and Laos after communist governments were established in 1975. Over the next 25 years and out of a total Indochinese population in 1975 of 56 million more than 3 million people would undertake the dangerous journey to become refugees in other countries of Southeast Asia Hong Kong or China. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees 250000 Vietnamese refugees had perished at sea by July 1986. More than 2.5 million Indochinese were resettled mostly in North America Australia and Europe. More than 525000 were repatriated either voluntarily or involuntarily mainly from Cambodia. The Indochinese refugees consisted of a number of different peoples including the Vietnamese the Sino-Vietnamese Hoa Cambodians fleeing the Khmer Rouge and hunger ethnic Laotians Iu Mien Hmong other highland peoples of Laos and Montagnard the highland peoples of Vietnam. They fled to nearby countries to seek temporary asylum and most requested permanent resettlement in third countries. The refugee outflow and humanitarian crisis was especially acute in 1979 and 1980. The six hearings printed in this volume focus on Indochina and the chain of events beginning with the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia in December 1978 and extending through the United Nations Conference on Cambodia in November 1979 and the subsequent international relief effort for the people of Cambodia. The hearings were arranged chronologically and appear under the subject headings: "SIno-Vietnamese Conflict" "Indochina Refugees" and "Famine in Cambodia". These hearings and the ensuing legislative activity represent in part the response of the Congress to the events of the previous year in Indochina. U. S. Government Printing Office paperback

This printed circular is titled “Transfer Office of the Southern Pacific Rail-Road Company / No. 54 Wall-Street / New York May 30 1857.” It is addressed to W. P. Mehville Wilne Esq. of Sandusky Ohio and franked with an imperforate Franklin stamp Scott #9 canceled by a black circular New York postmark. In nice shape with a tiny bit of soiling to the edges. The notice reads in part: “An installment of fifty cents a share will become due and payable on the three percent. Stock held by you in the Company on the first Monday of July next. . . Stock on which said instalment shall not be paid will be sold at auction in conformity with . . . the Charter. . . “About sixteen miles of our ‘Road’ are now graded and nearly furnished with cross-ties – twenty-four hundred and seventy-eight tons of rail-road iron have been bought and paid for and sent up Red River – sufficient to finish twenty-five miles of road.” . The Southern Pacific Rail-Road referenced in this document is not the much more famous transcontinental route. This railroad was founded on 16 February 1852 officially as the Vicksburg and El Paso Railroad although throughout the document it was referred to as the Texas Western Railroad. It was later bought by the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad for $600000. It was later acquired by Texas interests and its named officially changed to the Southern Pacific Railroad the predecessor of the Texas and Pacific Railway. It was never associated with the later and more famous transcontinental Southern Pacific. During 1857 the railroad laid 23 miles of track between Marshall and Swanson’s Landing on Caddo Creek. During the Civil War the line was connected to Shreveport Louisiana. In 1872 it was sold to the Texas Pacific Railroad Company which in 1976 merged with the Missouri Pacific Railroad. For more information see Werner’s “History of the Texas Western Railroad Companies” and “History of the Texas and Pacific Railway Company” both at the Texas State Historical Association website. Scarce. At the time of listing no other documents from this Southern Pacific Railroad are for sale in the trade. Although no other 1857 circulars documenting the construction of the first 16 miles of its track have been sold at auction other materials related to it have. OCLC shows no materials related to this Southern Pacific Railroad are held by institutions however it is possible there may some within the Texas & Pacific Railway Collection at the University of North Texas. . unknown books
