Ellenborough's letter 15 lines of text occupies the first leaf; with the pencil draft of Gough's reply also 15 lines with additions and deletions on the recto of the second leaf. Very good with traces of grey paper mount adhering in a thin strip to the reverse of the second leaf. Ellenborough will 'afford' Nichols 'every facility for the making of tracings from the Tiles at Southam'. If Nichols will let him know when he is coming he will 'make it a point to be here'. Suggests that Nichols might come 'after Church about 2 o'clock on Sunday next'. In reply Nichols says he will do himself 'the honour of calling at the hour you name'. Asks Ellenborough to 'give directions to drain & dry' the tiles as they 'have probably become very wet during the last two days' and makes another request relating to them. 17 November 1832; Southam House. unknown

Holderness begins the letter: 'It is very good of you to congratulate me on succeeding to poor Ritchie's responsibilities. I wish from the bottom of my heart that the circumstance had not arisen.' His shadow haunts the room.' He concludes with an invitation to Havelock-Allan to visit him 'whenever the spirit moves you'. On letterhead of the India Office, Whitehall. 24 October [1912]. unknown

réf. 22983Camp 4 miles West of 6 October 1799. 1 page 9 x 7 inches left margin a little ragged where integral leaf removed but in clean sound condition. Letters from the Indian Campaigns of Arthur Wellesley first Duke of Wellington 1769-1852 are uncommon. William Harness 1762-1804 an infantry officer had arrived in India in 1796 and was gazetted to a lieutenant-colonelcy with the 74th Regiment in 1799. It was in India that Wellington acquired his phenomenal mastery of the details of regimental duty. His string of successes included the conquests of Mysore Tanjore and Surat. Tippu was killed in the fortress of Seringapatam in April 1799. Colonel Arthur Wellesley remained in command of the military force quartered in Mysore. He was also responsible for the civil administration. Until September 1799 Wellesley was in pursuit of a freebooter called Dhoondiah and his followers who were defeated at Conahgull 10 September. unknown

198524 pages. Grainy black and white reproductions of photos. Text primarily in English, some in German. "I was at Auschwitz from January to December 1944." - page 3. A war injury led to the author being restricted to service on the home front. In 1943 he went to Ukraine to raise India rubber plants to supply Germany's wartime need for tires. When Germany lost Ukraine in 1943, he was transferred to the department of plant cultivation at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut, which had a branch at Auschwitz. It was only on his way there that he learned it was a concentration camp. Originally written in 1973, this appears to be a reprint circa 1985. Average wear. Some pencil markings. SINGERMAN 1317. Book
