1998It takes a fresh look at the perennial problem of the divide between the Hindus and Muslims and the partition of India it led to. Historical reasons have been analysed in the study in considerable depth and conclusions have been drawn. It debunks the efforts made by some apologists of Jinnah to shift the blame for partition on to others' shoulders and delineates the growh of separtism from the earliest times. The doctrine of two nations led to the creation and division of Pakistan and the inevitable division of the Muslims of the sub-continent into three nations. Historical forces which helped in the creation of a separate nation have been studied. About The Author:- An experienced media man scholar and author, S. C. 2000The phenomenon of “gender discrimination” exists more or less in all societies of the world, irrespective of their differences in region, religion, economy, polity, education, culture, social structure and so on. The sociological studies carried out at the global level and in cross-cultural context have revealed that women in general were not considered equal to men at the social level and they were not allowed to become active partners in the processes of change and development. Like other societies/communities in the Indian subcontinent, the Kashmiri women faced certain set degree of gender-based discrimination in the traditional situation. However, as a result of cumulative effect of the processes of modernization, this situation has changed qualitatively as well as quantitatively. While the direction of this change stands towards their total development and emancipation, it has also given rise to some crucial problems for themselves. It was in the context of preceding social dynamics that this study was carried out in the Kashmir valley. This book is based on [a] revised version of the report of an extensive empirical study carried out in Baramulla and Budgam district in 1996–1997 among 600 [approximately] selected and representative respondents; and [b] proceedings of the National Seminar in Srinagar in August 1997 [organized jointly by UNICEF, New Delhi; Jammu and Kashmir Government; and Department of Sociology, University of Kashmir] which discussed the findings of the report and prepared a set of recommendations to negate and debase the practices related to gender discrimination in the valley. In brief, the book portrays the existing reality, in statistics and description, related to the phenomenon of gender discrimination in the Kashmir valley. Moreover, it suggests the action programme to reduce and finally negate these undesirable practices. 2003The Kashmir section of the northern boundary is the heart of India’s boundary dispute with China. That is because Ladakh, of which the contentious Aksai Chin is a significant part, and Gilgit that stretched to the Little and Taghdumbash Pamirs, are central to India’s economic, political and military interests. Over these could run a distinctly possible autobahn or even a rail road to provide India her own commercial and political access to Central Asia. But then so are Tibet and Xinjiang, along the boundary, to which roads run from Ladakh and Gilgit, central to China’s interests. Therefore the eyeball to eyeball confrontation on the boundary for 50 years. The central and eastern sectors of the northern boundary are only pawns, an ultimate trade off, for Aksai Chin when time, China feels, is propitious for her. The boundary dispute is accentuated by an escalating economic and political rivalry worldwide between the two countries. This volume debunks many notions about the boundary dispute, delves deep into its different aspects to give a blow by blow account of as to how and why a conflict arose over the boundary. So also of the cloak and dagger diplomacy of Britain in Jammu and Kashmir State from day one it was born on 16th March 1846. About The Author:- Hriday Nath Kaul post-graduated in Diplomacy and International Affairs from the Allahabad University in 1950 and joined the Press Trust of India as a trainee-journalist. He has extensively written on Kashmir in newspapers, notably on Anglo-Dogra relations in the 19th century, the genesis of the boundary dispute. 2008The book past, Present and Future of Kashmir deals in detail with the problem of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Beginning with the political history of the state in ancient times it presents a chronology of Kashmiri rulers - Hindus, Muslims and the British respectively. When India was to become independent it was ruled by a Hindu King who failed in either way to decide the fate of the territory like other princely states of India. As a result of the mini war between India and Pakistan a portion of it was held by the latter and is known as Azad Kashmir. In post-independence phase it continues to be a contentious issue between the two neighbours and caused four devastating wars over it. Pakistan has complaints over its accession to the Union of India because at the time, public at large, were no consulted. The very composition of Pakistani society and political system as well witnessed a sea change towards the direction opposite to India. In recent year the two have realised the futility of third party began to look forward for better bilateral understanding to great rid of this vexed problem. 2011This Book contains a series of articles giving the author's first hand account of momentous events in the early years of our Independence. This includes the Partition holocaust in which millions got killed and millions got uprooted as also the author's interaction with some of the top leaders who shaped the destiny of the Nation. He has provided a deep Insight into the Kashmir problem. Based on his experience of service to the nation for nearly three quarters of a century in various capacities as an Army officer for forty years, as Ambassador for one year, and as Governor of Assam and of Jammu and Kashmir for eleven years," in the two most sensitive states in the country, he has given suggestions for dealing with the several serious security problems facing us. This book is A Good source of reference for present and future generations. "The artist views shadowing like the merging of tree, hazarding if it can subsume the body. Colouring of the dust cover lacquers and violently shakes the wide sweep of book through its 216 pages." About The Author:- Lt. Gen. S.K. Sinha, PVSM, was born in January 1926 and soon after graduating from Patna University in 1943, joined the Army. He saw combat service in Burma, Indonesia and Kashmir, Nagaland and Manipur. He held all levels of active command from a platoon to a field army. He also held key staff and instructional appointments. He received the highest military award for distinguished service. He resigned as Vice Chief of Army Staff in 1983 following his surprise supersession for Army Chief. This rocked the Parliament and led to much controversy in the media. Stephen Cohen, the noted US expert on South Asia referred to him as one of India's most outstanding Generals since Independence. He was appointed India's Ambassador to Nepal in 1990 when Indo-Nepal relations had hit their nadir. He restored them to the highest level of cordiality and helped in restoration of democracy in Nepal. The Prime Minister of Nepal wrote, "General Sinha was as much India's Ambassador to Nepal as Nepal's Ambassador to India." In 1997 he was appointed Governor of Assam when insurgency was at its peak. During his tenure ULFA insurgency was wiped out and a mind change brought about among the people. He was popularly called "a true son of the soil of Assam". In 2003 he was appointed Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. During his five year tenure, near normalcy was restored in the State with the average rate of daily killing coming down from 10 to I. 2014This book on Kashmir titled History of Kas'mira (Kashmir) is his ten years research and writing effort, which covers many facets of Kas'mira (Kashmir) Aryans, Naga's, Evolution, Rulers from Ancient times, Religious Beliefs/Worship, Religious Era's, Aberrations in Kalhan's Rajatarangiri and Goddesses of Kas'mira (Kashmir). The contents are all that what we must know about Kas'mira; triumphs, travails, origins and various facets of history Brigadier Kaul was the one to bring, for the first time, latest photograph of more than 1000 years old Sharda Temple in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and share it with Goddess Sharda's worshippers in India. These are not the triumphs and travails of Aryan Saraswat Brahmins of Kas'mira {Kashmir}, commonly referred to as Bhatta or now Kashmiri Pandit, but transition of Aryan Saraswat community as a whole through millenniums of religious philosophies, search of identity, Gotra orientation, honorific's; Bhatta and Pandit and selective surnames. This medium intends to remind of Aryan roots, genesis of specific names and surnames, honorific, with details, to give insight of that era, before these pass into oblivion. Not much is known correctly about the rulers of Kas'mira except what has been mentioned in Kalhan's Rajatarangini, which in any case covers period upto 1150 AD only. Though there have been some other chronicles, most of them except that of Jonaraja fell short of expectations. Even both these did not cover our origins, roots, settlements, religious beliefs, transition during the second millennium. Rulers are responsible for shaping the destiny of their subjects, the book covers this aspect and analyses their effort in shaping Kas'mira. A composite compendium of all what we should know of Kas'mira over the last over five millenniums, including events that shaped life in the beautiful valley of Sage Kashyap, land of Vitasta River and what Kalhan mentioned: “There even to this day drops of sandal ointment offered by the Gods are to be seen at Nandikshetra, the residence of Shiva. 2002The present study offers an assessment of security concerns in Central Asia after the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991. It deals with the transition period for the five Central Asian States from the communist system to a democratic and pluralistic one. Essentially, the focus of the writer is on bilateral, multilateral and international commitments of these States to ensure peace and security in the region. The withdrawal of nuclear warheads from Kazakhstan, collective security formula, bilateral agreements and the role of the big powers— all make an interesting study. The author has discussed these concerns in the context of the stance of neighbouring States vis-a-vis Central Asia. Economic interests also figure wherever necessary. 2006The demand of State autonomy has remained a highly contentious issue in Indian Politics right since the time when accession of Kashmir to the Indian federalism took place. This is a demand that often generate tension between Center and the State. It is felt that the autonomy for the State may actually come to mean autonomy for Kashmir region only. It may not flow to the regional and sub-regional levels. The autonomy that extends beyond the State needs a multi-layered package of autonomy that extends beyond the State to the regional or sub-regional levels. Autonomy is needed to inspire confidence to the people, to make the system more democratic, to ensure speedier and balanced development and to make the administration accountable to the people and thus more efficient and above all, to evolve a composite and harmonious personality of the State. None of these can be achiever in the present unitary system of the state and by centralization of power and administration. A more federalized and bottom-up approach is needed to solve the problem of the State. This book is an attempt to examine the relationship of Kashmir identity with the Indian Union, the regional identity of Jammu and Ladakh with the State. This book on the one hand is the description of the relationship between the Centre and the State and on the other hand is the description of relationship between the three regions, namely Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. My prescription is deeply federal and decentralizing in nature. About The Author:- Sunita, is a Lecturer in Kalindi College, University of Delhi.
