2011This Book contains a series of articles giving the author's first hand account of momentous events in the early years of our Independence. This includes the Partition holocaust in which millions got killed and millions got uprooted as also the author's interaction with some of the top leaders who shaped the destiny of the Nation. He has provided a deep Insight into the Kashmir problem. Based on his experience of service to the nation for nearly three quarters of a century in various capacities as an Army officer for forty years, as Ambassador for one year, and as Governor of Assam and of Jammu and Kashmir for eleven years," in the two most sensitive states in the country, he has given suggestions for dealing with the several serious security problems facing us. This book is A Good source of reference for present and future generations. "The artist views shadowing like the merging of tree, hazarding if it can subsume the body. Colouring of the dust cover lacquers and violently shakes the wide sweep of book through its 216 pages." About The Author:- Lt. Gen. S.K. Sinha, PVSM, was born in January 1926 and soon after graduating from Patna University in 1943, joined the Army. He saw combat service in Burma, Indonesia and Kashmir, Nagaland and Manipur. He held all levels of active command from a platoon to a field army. He also held key staff and instructional appointments. He received the highest military award for distinguished service. He resigned as Vice Chief of Army Staff in 1983 following his surprise supersession for Army Chief. This rocked the Parliament and led to much controversy in the media. Stephen Cohen, the noted US expert on South Asia referred to him as one of India's most outstanding Generals since Independence. He was appointed India's Ambassador to Nepal in 1990 when Indo-Nepal relations had hit their nadir. He restored them to the highest level of cordiality and helped in restoration of democracy in Nepal. The Prime Minister of Nepal wrote, "General Sinha was as much India's Ambassador to Nepal as Nepal's Ambassador to India." In 1997 he was appointed Governor of Assam when insurgency was at its peak. During his tenure ULFA insurgency was wiped out and a mind change brought about among the people. He was popularly called "a true son of the soil of Assam". In 2003 he was appointed Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. During his five year tenure, near normalcy was restored in the State with the average rate of daily killing coming down from 10 to I. His effort to promote Kashmiriyat, amity across religious divide, was much appreciated. Dr Abdul Kalam highly commended it. Contents:- Introduction Part I : OLD MEMORIES : , 1. When Bapu Died , 2. 2006The demand of State autonomy has remained a highly contentious issue in Indian Politics right since the time when accession of Kashmir to the Indian federalism took place. This is a demand that often generate tension between Center and the State. It is felt that the autonomy for the State may actually come to mean autonomy for Kashmir region only. It may not flow to the regional and sub-regional levels. The autonomy that extends beyond the State needs a multi-layered package of autonomy that extends beyond the State to the regional or sub-regional levels. Autonomy is needed to inspire confidence to the people, to make the system more democratic, to ensure speedier and balanced development and to make the administration accountable to the people and thus more efficient and above all, to evolve a composite and harmonious personality of the State. None of these can be achiever in the present unitary system of the state and by centralization of power and administration. A more federalized and bottom-up approach is needed to solve the problem of the State. This book is an attempt to examine the relationship of Kashmir identity with the Indian Union, the regional identity of Jammu and Ladakh with the State. This book on the one hand is the description of the relationship between the Centre and the State and on the other hand is the description of relationship between the three regions, namely Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. My prescription is deeply federal and decentralizing in nature. About The Author:- Sunita, is a Lecturer in Kalindi College, University of Delhi. 2008The book past, Present and Future of Kashmir deals in detail with the problem of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Beginning with the political history of the state in ancient times it presents a chronology of Kashmiri rulers - Hindus, Muslims and the British respectively. When India was to become independent it was ruled by a Hindu King who failed in either way to decide the fate of the territory like other princely states of India. As a result of the mini war between India and Pakistan a portion of it was held by the latter and is known as Azad Kashmir. In post-independence phase it continues to be a contentious issue between the two neighbours and caused four devastating wars over it. Pakistan has complaints over its accession to the Union of India because at the time, public at large, were no consulted. The very composition of Pakistani society and political system as well witnessed a sea change towards the direction opposite to India. In recent year the two have realised the futility of third party began to look forward for better bilateral understanding to great rid of this vexed problem.
