Adrien-Hubert Brué 1786 - 1832 was a renowned French cartographer. Between 1810 and 1830 Brué established himself as one of the most important French cartographers and it was during this period that his two most important works were published: Grand Atlas Universel in 1815 and Atlas Universel in 1822 which ran to several editions. Atlas Universel was published as a continuation to Grand Atlas Universel. Brués maps or cards as they were referred to at the time were characterized by the high degree of accuracy with which they were produced and the meticulous attention to detail employed in their crafting. This was possible due to Brués application of copper plate intaglio to the process of mapmaking or as Nouvelles Annales des Voyages et des Sciences Géographiques had it: by applying to the making of cards this ingenious process of drawing on copper itself. Alexandre von Humboldt the President of the Société de géographie de Paris praised the accuracy of his work and clarity that is all the more pleasing to the eye. He also was quick to update his maps with the latest scientific discoveries and nautical measurements. Wikipedia unknown

His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". 1925Best.-Nr. 6159Various places 1925. Very good. Fourteen silver gelatin photographs 8 x 10 inches. Minor wear and soiling. Images generally crisp and clear. A handsome group of photographs possibly taken on someone's holiday through the Caribbean showing scenes in Barbados Martinique the Panama Canal and Guaira Venezuela. Five of the images show Barbados. Of note are a view taken from the water showing the harbor and the local boats with the dock workers; a tree-lined dirt avenue with houses on one side; and a handsome view of locals crossing a bridge with Parliament in the background. Of the four views of Martinique three show Mount Pelee and the fourth is a lovely shot of two local women on a dirt road barefoot and carrying baskets of produce on their heads. The three images of Venezuela are all taken from aboard a ship and show coastline. The two photos of the Panama Canal depict a ship -- presumably the author's vessel -- transiting the locks. Both are well-composed and give an early view of this important technological wonder. A nice group. unknown

1867Best.-Nr. BK0152Barbados: Office of "The Official Gazette" No. 14 Broad Street 1867. 30 pp. with unnumbered index 42 pp. Half leather over cloth boards. Ink ownership inscription "W. Brandford Griffith / 1869" on a preliminary blank. Scattered foxing and light toning. A locally printed manual for the Barbados House of Assembly with the ownership inscription of William Brandford Griffith then both a member of the Assembly and the island's auditor-general. Griffith served in the Assembly from 1861 to 1874 and was appointed auditor-general in 1863; he subsequently held several other colonial offices before becoming governor of the Gold Coast in 1885. The rules numbered through 271 and accompanied by an extensive alphabetical index set out the conduct of the Assembly's public business. The index includes procedures for issuing election writs and returning the names of elected members to the governor and council together with the course to be followed when writs had not been executed. Although published well after emancipation these rules governed an Assembly whose electorate remained restricted by property qualifications. Free men of color had gained voting rights subject to those qualifications in 1831 and Samuel Jackman Prescod entered the Assembly in 1843. Planters and merchants nevertheless continued to dominate both the Assembly and the Legislative Council during the period in which Griffith served.
