réf. LL 962"Códice Diplomático-Americano de Cristóbal Colón: colección de cartas de privilegios cédulas y otras escrituras del gran descubridor del Nuevo Mundo…" Prologue by Diego Ruiz Toledo; introduction by Gio. Battista Spotorno. Habana: Imprenta y Librería "El Iris" 1867. Octavo 24 × 17 cm. X 298 2 XIV pp. With engraved frontispiece portrait of Columbus three folding facsimile plates and one folding genealogical table; text in Spanish. This Havana Códice brings together the principal diplomatic and legal documents relating to Columbus: royal privileges and confirmations granted by the Catholic Monarchs capitulations cédulas and other official writings that defined his status as "almirante mayor del mar océano virey y gobernador de las islas y Tierra Firme de las Indias". The edition is based on G.B. Spotorno's 1823 Genoa Codice diplomatico but here the introduction and notes as well as documents originally in other languages are rendered into Spanish by Diego Ruiz Toledo making the documentary corpus accessible to a broader Spanish-speaking readership in the Americas. The work is of particular value for American and Columbian studies: it assembles scattered archival pieces into a single volume supplies an explanatory apparatus and reproduces key items in facsimile including signatures and royal instruments together with a genealogical table that reflects nineteenth-century efforts to trace and define Columbus's lineage. As such it is both a sourcebook for the legal and political history of contact and an example of how the figure of Columbus was being re-edited and canonized in the nineteenth century. Why was it published in Cuba Although the volume reprints an Italian edition prepared in Genoa in 1823 this 1867 issue appears from the Havana press "El Iris" one of the more active mid-nineteenth-century Cuban printing houses. Publishing it in Cuba meant that an authoritative compilation of Columbus's documents—central to the legal history of the Spanish monarchy in America—could circulate in the Caribbean and Spanish America not just in Europe. It aligned with a broader nineteenth-century interest in foundational colonial documents and in the figure of Columbus himself at a time when Cuban and Spanish-American intellectuals were revisiting the origins of Spanish rule in the Americas. 1958réf. 72030Havana: Santos Foto ca. 1958. Original Cuban Revolution era photograph showing a seated group of five people. 9 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches. In the center is a soldier very much trying to look like Che Guevara with a full beard and mustache in army cloths and hat and holding a rifle. Seated on either side of him are two couples all in street clothes and each of the men is holding a rifle. The guns appear to be Thompson M1 A1s which would place this photograph at the beginning of the Revolution before Soviet weapons were commonplace. The photographer Santos Foto Habana is identified in the plate and stamped on the rear. Ironically this picture is laid into a Empire Room Waldorf Astoria printed folder. It should be noted that Che Guevara once worked as a dishwasher at the Waldorf so this pairing is probably intentional. Santos Foto hardcover
