With a new introduction and new original material by Paul Axel-Lute by Paul Axel-Lute Collection Development Librarian Rutgers School of Law Library Newark. xii xxxiii 1556 pp. Reprinted 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange Ltd. The Revision of 1877 satisfied an 1871 act of the Legislature to "revise simplify arrange and consolidate" all the general and permanent public statutes of New Jersey." It is valuable today chiefly as a tool for tracing the history of legislation. As Axel-Lute observes in his introduction "there are nearly seven hundred current sections in New Jersey Statutes Annotated for which the oldest source cited in the historical note is the Revision of 1877. To trace these sections back to earlier sources the researcher must use marginal notes and enactment date information in the 1877 work" iii. In addition to his informative introduction Axel-Lute has added a detailed table of contents a feature that wasn't included in the original work. unknown

1800réf. 34359Newark: Printed by Matthias Day 1800. Title 1-456; i-xxii; 1-46. Errata sheet bound in. 1 vols. 8vo signed in fours. Full contemporary sheepskin border of blind-stamped dots on covers. Owners' signatures one contemporary and stamps. Some wear to joints and hinges generally browned dampstaining to preliminaries at gutter else a very good sturdy copy. A FIRST IN WOMEN'S AND BLACK SUFFRAGE. Title 1-456; i-xxii; 1-46. Errata sheet bound in. 1 vols. 8vo signed in fours. Notable on page 231 paragraph XI is a reiteration of legislation originally set fourth in the New Jersey Constitution in 1776 reading in part: "And be it enacted That all free inhabitants of this state of full age who are worth fifty pounds proclamation money and have resided within the county in which they claim a vote for twelve months immediately preceding the election shall be entitled to vote for all public officers." Once dismissed as a possible oversight or sloppy wording on the part of its framers historians now believe that the phrase "all free inhabitants" intentionally extended the right to vote not only to women but to free blacks as well as aliens. In addition the act does include a property requirement only that the person be worth "fifty pounds proclamation money" which included cash. This short-lived legislation which was rescinded in 1807 makes New Jersey the first state to extend the right to vote citizens regardless of race or gender. On the first leaf of a bifolium the recto of the second leaf being addressed by him to ‘Countess of Jersey / &c &c &c’. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. Written in high eighteenth-century style. Begins: ‘Madam / If you have receiv’d the slightest amusement from my imperfect composition I am most highly gratified and feel myself very sensibly flatter’d by the honor you confer upon me by your condescending to regret the loss which I have infinitely ye most reason to lament.’ He wishes her ‘every possible enjoyment’ of her ‘health and happiness in all your branches’ till he has ‘ye honor of paying you and Lord Jersey my respects in town’. He will ‘not fail to remember any commands you lay upon me’. The valediction with ornate signature reads: ‘I have ye honor to be / Madam / Your Ladyship’s most / obedt & obligd hum. 1864réf. 3721N.p. but most likely Newark N.J. 1864. Good plus. Letterpress broadside printed in two columns 16.5 x 10 inches. Old folds small chip to top outer margin two tiny holes affecting just a few letters. A very rare Unionist broadside supporting the re-election of Abraham Lincoln in the critical presidential contest of 1864. The present broadside was authored in early June 1864 by New Jersey Republican Party stalwart Horace N. Congar an editor diplomat and politician who was at that time serving as U.S. consul to Hong Kong. In this rather stirring broadside which Congar writes from his position in Hong Kong he lauds "the thousands of earnest faithful men who are giving freely of their blood and treasure to the suppression of this infamous rebellion" and "the noble daring the undaunted courage and the determined valour of our brave soldiers of Freedom" and urges that "in November New Jersey will stand in the unbroken rank of States giving their verdict for the Party of Union." He also spends considerable space discussing the clear role of "the social moral and political evil" of slavery as the precipitating event of the Civil War. Congar writes that "the evil it has wrought was as natural as the poisoned breath of the Upas tree." Stated clearly Congar writes "I heartily rejoice at the destruction of slavery" and looks forward to the time when "I shall tread my native land with a newer life if within its boundless domain there shall not be heard the clanking chain or the cry of the suffering and the oppressed." "Horace Newton Congar 1817-1893 was a radical republican politician during the midnineteenth century and served on both the state and national levels. Mr. Congar had a great love for his party and hope for its success which is reflected in his writing . Horace Newton Congar was born in Newark on July 31 1817. He married Isabell Reeves and had two children; a daughter Ella and a son Horace Junior. Horace Congar taught school for a while and he studied law in his leisure time. He was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar in 1847 and later Cornelius Boice of Plainfield and Lewis Grove of Newark were his law partners. Congar was a friend of the abolitionist cause and he was one of the founders of the antislavery Free Soil Party in New Jersey. The party slogan 'Free Soil Free Speech Free Labor and Free Men' basically described the party platform. Congar later became a delegate from New Jersey to the Republican National Convention in 1848 which was held in Buffalo. He supported the nomination of Van Buren for president and Adams for vice-president" - New Jersey Historical Society. A rare and unusual Lincoln campaign broadside with just two physical copies in OCLC at AAS and Middlebury College. unknown
