Killens John Oliver 1916-1987 Introduction. The Trial Record of Denmark Vesey. Boston: Beacon Press 1970. xxi 175 pp. Orange quarter cloth over boards. Light shelfwear with slight rubbing to spine and corners. Internally clean. A very good copy. $150. A reprint of the official 1822 report on the trials related to the Denmark Vesey slave revolt conspiracy. The original report titled An Official Report of the Trials of Sundry Negroes Charged with an Attempt to Raise an Insurrection in the State of South-Carolina. was edited by Lionel Henry Kennedy and Thomas Parker who served as presiding magistrates at the trials. This edition includes an introduction by author and activist John Oliver Killens. The volume documents the events surrounding the thwarted 1822 slave revolt in Charleston South Carolina planned by a free Black carpenter named Denmark Vesey. Inspired by the successful Haitian Revolution Vesey allegedly organized thousands of enslaved and free Black people to seize Charleston kill slaveholders and escape to Haiti. The central part of the book contains the official proceedings and witness testimony from the trials that followed the betrayal of the plot. This court-sanctioned account is the primary source of information on the alleged plot and the people involved. Historical Impact: The original 1822 report was a product of the white planter class's attempt to control the narrative and suppress potential dissent. The re-publication of this document in 1970 with Killens' introduction reframes the material for a modern audience and places it within the larger history of Black resistance. The conspiracy and subsequent trials significantly heightened racial fears in the antebellum South and led to stricter laws controlling enslaved and free Black people. The addition of John Oliver Killens' introduction provides contemporary commentary on the historical document interpreting it from a Black liberation perspective and highlighting Vesey as a significant figure in the history of Black nationalism and emancipation. unknown books

There is a seating capacity for eight guests at a time and the table is shared by other customers. The food served consists primarily of salads such as cucumber mushroom crab beet and herring but there is also liver paté and smoked salmon…” Identified amongst the signators are: Ingrid Bergman Louise Allbritton Virginia Field Mario Lanza Groucho Marx Marlene Dietrich Carl Brick Helen Traubel Miriam Hopkins Elsie D. This magnificent edition was published by Frederick Ill more than forty years after the promulgation. The engravings are by Andreas Reinhardt 1676-1742 a German artist who worked in Copenhagen after the designs of the Danish artist Moinchen. The calligraphic text is by M.A. Roeg 1679-1737 a calligrapher of Norwegian origin who later became medal engraver to Louis XV. He is probably the artist responsible for the fine calligraphic portrait of Frederick III. The text of Lex Regia was edited by Schumacher Frederick's private secretary.
