1841réf. 16578London: Thomas M'Lean 1841. Very good condition. A lovely mezzotint engraved portrait of the Queen 1792 - 1849 dressed in widow's garb following the death of her husband King William IV of England. The capital city of the Australian state of South Australia was named in honor of the Queen when it was founded in 1836. South Australia was formed under the Act for the Colonization of South Australia of 1834 and was intended to be a haven of civil and religious liberties. The portrait of the Queen is a charming one; she gazes steadily out her hair in braids with a black lace veil over her head and around her shoulders. Engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall 1811 - 1867 engraver to Queen Victoria and based on the painting by William Charles Ross 1794 - 1860. 13 1/2 x 17 1/2". Image printed and laid on to thicker paper; with very slt toning to thicker paper at outer edges o/w very good. Thomas M'Lean unknown
1880réf. 166761880. Four albumen photographs of Sydney all with the Charles Bayliss blind stamp. Charles Bayliss 1850 - 1897 one of Australia's preeminent landscape photographers who worked for years with Merlin and Holtermann before setting up his own shop in Sydney in 1879. He established his studio at 348 George Street; then moved to 335a George Street advertising himself as a photographer of city and country views often with people and making views to be sold individually while also contributing images for albums. He also made remarkable 360 degree panoramas of the city of Sydney around this time. These four images are mounted on a page from an album with handwritten captions in black ink. The first photograph "Sydney Harbor NSW" is a view looking over rooftops toward the harbor and tall masted ships moored and docked; and "Sydney Observatory" looking up toward the building from a lower vantage point; both with handwritten labels laid down and with the C. Bayliss stamp at the lower left. On the verso are "Botanical Gardens Sydney" which shows an entrance gate with an open doorway and view into the garden at the right and "Nepean River NSW" with a view across the river to cliffs on the far side are blind stamped at the lower right "C. Bayliss Photo Copyright". Album page 9 x 11 1/2"; each photograph 7 x 4 1/2". Album page chipped at corners; photographs very good condition. unknown
1870réf. 17145Colchester England: Oldham & Angle Photographers 1870. Photography. Very good overall. Carte de visite showing the Australian General Tom Thumb aka John David Armstrong who made his debut in Melbourne in 1870 and performed world wide. An uncommon image with Tom Thumb standing next to an ornately carved chair and dresser dressed in coat and tails and holding a sheaf of papers. The visit of the American Charles Stratton "Tom Thumb" and his wife Lavinia to Australia in the late 1860s as part of the PT Barnum round the world tour resulted in a huge fascination with little people worldwide. With the title below the photograph. Text on the verso: "this photograph is from the studio of G. A. Graham 8 Mersea Road. With photographers imprint: Oldham & Angle Photographers 11 Queen St. & 8 Mersea Rd. Colchester". Below the stamp: "The higher class photographs only taken by Sydney B. Angle 11 Queen St.". 2 1/2 x 4". Slt faded. Oldham & Angle Photographers unknown
1883réf. 208551883. Very good overall. An interesting hand painted and roneoed ship's musical program. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger". The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani. The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage on the NLA website. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883. The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration. An unusual survival. unknown

1868réf. 80705Adelaide: E.S. Wigg and J. Howell 1868. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide E.S. Wigg and J. Howell 1868. Duodecimo viii 124 4 index 148 South Australian Directory 4 index 177 South Australian Almanack Advertiser pages including the rear endpaper advertisements plus front endpaper advertisements and rear cover advertising - but this copy lacks pages 169-76 of the advertising section and the folding map originally tipped ìn at the title page a small portion of the first panel remains as proof. Flush-cut cloth boards rebacked with the bulk of the original spine retained; cloth a little marked with minor silverfish damage; a few trifling marks to some pages; a very good copy rare in any condition. Our current average rate of handling copies of this item is one every 20 years. 1887réf. 146793Adelaide: E. Spiller Government Printer 1887. Fine. Adelaide E. Spiller Government Printer 1887. Foolscap folio 2 pages plus a very large folding colour map 'General Plan showing Beetaloo Water District .' 1033 × 667 mm. Drop-title; pinholes and tiny notches in the left-hand margin where previously bound now disbound; in fine condition. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 110 of 1887; 670 copies of the text and 820 copies of the map were printed. The paper is an interim report for the construction of the Beetaloo Reservoir situated between Napperby and Laura in South Australia's mid-north. The map is something completely different - a real sleeper. The full title is 'General Plan showing Beetaloo Water District as proclaimed Mains laid and authorised Service Reservoirs Tanks and Head-works; also Levels taken along Roads surveyed for Reticulation. 1887'. It covers in great detail a large rectangular area extending to Port Pirie Napperby and Laura in the north; Arthurton and Port Wakefield in the south; Port Broughton Wallaroo and Moonta on the west; and Gladstone Narridy and Koolunga on the east. 1858réf. 118485Adelaide: Printed by David Gall for John Howell bookseller and manufacturing stationer 1858. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Adelaide Printed by David Gall for John Howell bookseller and manufacturing stationer 1858. 220 × 95 mm viii 108 36 advertisements pages plus an advertisement across each endpaper inner surfaces of the free endpapers blank. The 'Map of Adelaide to face Title' referred to in the list of contents is excised from this copy. Original plain cream cloth with an orange paper title-label on the front cover; cloth a little stained and a little worn at the extremities with minor loss to the corners and spine; four small areas of the rear cover a little indented each with two short parallel cuts to the cloth; two conjugate leaves pages 85/86 and 107/108 torn out and screwed up at some stage were later repaired and reinserted with clear tape which stained the paper and have recently been expertly restored; rear free endpaper torn away leaving just a small attached fragment; a few other minor signs of age and use; overall a decent copy with the contemporary ownership details of A.L. Young ink-stamped and as 'A. Lincoln Young' written in ink on the front cover front and rear pastedowns and front free endpaper and added to the foot of the Adelaide directory with his address 25 Royal Exchange written there and on the front cover. The Adelaide directory listing name occupation and address runs to 47 pages; the Port Adelaide one is seven pages long. Considering the colony was founded barely two decades earlier it is an extensive yet unpretentious list. For example the four entries under MANN in Adelaide are 'Joseph carpenter Brown street J. bonnet maker Brown street Elizabeth mangle woman Gouger street His Honour Judge Sturt street'. At the foot of the calendar page for each month there are notes under the headings 'Garden' 'Flower Garden' Fruit Trees' and 'Field' on average about 12 lines each month. Ferguson 10603 not noting the preliminaries or the map; not recording any details of the binding. The State Library of NSW has a copy on Trove not recording the presence of the preliminaries or the 36 pages of advertisements but noting the dimensions of the map as 220 × 100 mm. Printed by David Gall [for John Howell, bookseller and manufacturing stationer] hardcover
1874réf. 115380Melbourne: E. & D. Syme 'The Leader' Office and Adelaide Frearson & Bro 1874. First Edition. Paperback. Fair. Melbourne E. & D. Syme 'The Leader' Office and Adelaide Frearson & Bro. 1874. Octavo iv second and last blank 59 pages. Maroon binder's cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover retaining the original printed wrappers possibly lined with plain paper at an early date; front wrapper waterstained and a little marked with minor loss in two places along the plain top margin and with two short sealed tears; light marginal tidemarks to the rear wrapper; title page a little foxed; bottom corner edges a little marked bleeding very slightly into a few margins; a few top corner creases or missing tips to the first ten leaves; overall a decent copy. 'The following Papers are reprinted from "The Farm" section of the Melbourne "Leader". The writer left Melbourne on 1st September 1874 and returned on the 30th November. The early Papers were written during September in which month the country round Adelaide is seen at its very best. The areas of Gawler Kapunda Kooringa Hill River Estate Clare and surroundings were visited during October and the return journey between Adelaide and Mount Gambier including Strathalbyn Willunga Goolwa Hindmarsh Island Narracoorte and the Drainage Country took place during November' preface. The critical comments on contemporary vine cultivation and wine production make interesting reading. Visits were made to properties and individuals well-known to this day: Davenport Boothby Crompton Auld Mrs Penfold Thomas Elder and Birksgate Thomas Hardie sic and Bankside and 'Clare - Seven Hills and St. Aloysius' College' with numerous 'Notable Wine Growers' in the region mentioned. Many areas significant in the modern vine and wine industry are conspicuously absent in this survey at least in this regard. Ferguson 9210. E. & D. 1998réf. 142481St Lucia: University of Queensland Press 1998. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. St Lucia University of Queensland Press 1998. Quarto xxiv 376 pages with a few illustrations plus 8 pages of plates from photographs 4 full-page. Quarter cloth and papered boards with a colour-pictorial inlay on the front cover; cloth lightly marked; top corners and the bottom edge of the front cover slightly bumped; textblock lightly tanned presumably as ever; occasional pencilling but see below; a very good copy. The hardback edition was limited to only 500 copies. The book comes from the collection of a well-known journalist whose pencilled annotations start on the half-title with 'Pathetic & heartbreaky'. Loosely inserted is the print-out of a contemporary email from a colleague regarding in the main the book: both parties are mentioned seven or eight times in the index. 'In life she alternated between being sweet as pie and utterly gangrenous about everyone' appears early in the text of that email; we'll leave the rest for the purchaser of this item. Several relevant newspaper clippings are also included; not least is a review by Samela Harris titled 'Diary of misery strips author of final dignity'. University of Queensland Press hardcover
