Engraved hydrographical chart on watermarked double sheet 99 x 63 cm soundings in metres lighthouses picked out in yellow and red inset map of the port and town of Tenedos central fold a few very slight edge tears to the generous margins light spotting and surface soiling but in very good condition. Fine and impressive large naval chart of this strategically important strait then still under the control of the Ottoman Empire. 1945ref. 180206Sydney.: H.E.C. Robinson. Circa1945. Full colour inset maps principal cities and towns marked shipping routes international boundaries and railways. 99 x 73cm. Some small insect damage has been repaired on the verso visible on map as a few small lighter areas in the western Pacific. Pinpoint holes at folds paper repair along cover but a very good clean copy. From the Sydney publisher H.E.C. Robinson the firm founded in 1895 by Herbert Robinson 1857-1933 a founder of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia. Although the map is undated North and South Korea are shown as divided which occurred in late 1945 and Manchuria is marked as still under Soviet occupation which only lasted until 1946 at which point it was handed over to Communist China. As well as what now would be considered Southeast Asia the main map shows the eastern half of India Tibet and parts of Mongolia the USSR and East Asia. Inset maps include: Caroline Islands Marshall Islands Federation of Malaya Singapore Hong Kong Taiwan Japan Hawaiian Islands Philippine Islands Midway Gaum and Wake Islands Fiji Islands Eastern & Western Samoa Santa Cruz and Solomon Islands New Caledonia Rabaul Tahiti Lord Howe etc. . Engraved panorama on watermarked laid paper 28.5 x 77.5 including captions; 31 x 79.5 cm sheet title cartouche engraved key in French and Dutch the upper margin trimmed to the platemark original folds edgewear and toning neat sealed tear to the outer edge barely visible 5mm intrusion to the image a very good dark impression. Finely composed and engraved panorama of Tokyo prepared for the monumental work "Galerie Agreable du Monde" by the master Dutch publisher Pieter Van de Aa 1659-1733. The detailed key in Dutch and French notes myriad buildings and temples on the horizon and in the foreground two processions converge: of nobles and their attendants dancers a trio of dogs and a priest or religious attending a suppliant. Pieter van der Aa 1659-1733 was born in Leiden Holland and started his own book publishing business when he was only twenty-three. His prolific output of highly decorated maps and atlases culminated in his magnum opus “Galerie Agreable du Monde” which illustrated the world known to Europeans in the early eighteenth century. Comprising 66 volumes it was the of plates published at that time it has been estimated that only 100 copies were published. . Chez Pierre van der Aa unknown

Twenty one loose maps with tissue guards printed on sheets 49.5 x 63.5 cm in the original folio title-wrappers the maps with some edge wear and toning but on the whole in very good condition the wrappers browned and stained torn with minor loss at the foot of the title wrapper small closed edge tears now re-enforced with archival material and sound. Lacking the introductory notes by Edward Heawood. The complete suite of maps: an impressive production. The first map is a general map of England and Ireland by an unknown author 1594; nineteen county maps; and a final sheet of miniature county maps printed as a deck of playing-cards. The county maps proper vary in date from Saxton's “Southamtonia” of 1575 to John Speed's version of Norden's map of Sussex dated 1610. A contemporary reviewer dubbed it " a rich cartographical feast" allowing easy access to rare and valuable maps and comparison of maps by different cartographers for the same county. The county maps reproduced include five by Christopher Saxton three by John Norden Philip Symonson's map of Eastern Kent published in 1596 a series of seven maps dating from the early years of the seventeenth century two maps prepared for Camden and two published by John Speed. . The maps were compiled by longtime New York City Department of Public Works map clerk and city surveyor Otto Sackersdorff noted for his 'Maps of Farms Commonly called The Blue Book 1815". The Blue Book was not published until 1868 as a demonstration of northern economic might at the end of the Civil War. The real estate maps show property lines existing roads parks shorelines wetlands and the Manhattan grid extending from west of 8th Avenue at 59th Street and Columbus Circle up to 222nd Street and Spuyten Duyvil & Kingsbridge. Parks and major thoroughfares include: Central Park St. Nicholas Avenue Fort Washington Park Kingsbridge Road and High Bridge Park. Folio 15 x 20 1/2" 14 maps in total: 1 full page and 13 double page 28 x 20" hand colored lithographed map sheets. Each map contiguous with one another. Period quarter green gilt leather and dark green buckram boards. Spine gently rubbed; the maps exceptionally bright and clean. Previous owner inscription in pencil E. B. Van Winkle from Chas. H. Myers July 1875. Van Winkle was a civil engineer with an interest in road construction and drainage having written a report on the drainage of the 23rd & 24th wards of New York City.
