1944ref. 185391944. Paris Liberation parade photographs 1944 document the public reassertion of French sovereignty and Allied military authority immediately following the collapse of Nazi control in the capital. The images center on the ceremonial procession along the Champs-Élysées on 26 August 1944 one day after German forces formally surrendered in Paris. They include appearances by Charles de Gaulle Dwight D. Eisenhower Marie-Pierre Kœnig and Omar Bradley placing the photographs within the coordinated political and military staging of liberation in which Free French leadership and Allied command presented a unified front before a mass civilian audience. The scenes of tanks artillery units and dense crowds mark the transition from occupation to liberation while the inclusion of captured German soldiers being publicly displayed records the immediate aftermath of military defeat and the symbolic reversal of power in an occupied European capital. 20 black and white silver gelatin photographs. Paris France August 1944. Images depict the Champs-Élysées procession Place de la Concorde gatherings and ceremonial activity at the Arc de Triomphe including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Several photographs show American field artillery units advancing through Paris streets surrounded by civilians while others capture official reviewing platforms with de Gaulle Kœnig and Bradley. One photograph shows Eisenhower at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; another documents German prisoners under public observation. Individual prints measure approximately 2.5 x 3.5 inches. The liberation of Paris followed the entry of General Philippe Leclerc's forces into the city on 25 August 1944 targeting key administrative and symbolic sites including Place de la Concorde Opéra Garnier and Rue de Rivoli where German command structures had been concentrated. The surrender at the Hôtel de la Marine and the immediate restoration of the French flag marked the end of four years of occupation. The following day's parade functioned as both a military demonstration and a political act reinforcing de Gaulle's authority and asserting continuity of the French state. These photographs provide a contemporaneous visual record of that moment capturing both the organized display of Allied force and the civilian participation that defined the public experience of liberation. Light wear and minor handling marks consistent with age; overall very good condition. unknown books

1885ref. 140511885. Neurdein Frères Paris Opera circa 1887 to 1890 documents the Palais Garnier and the concentrated carriage and pedestrian traffic surrounding one of the principal public buildings of late nineteenth century Paris. Completed in 1875 the opera house stood within the rebuilt urban landscape of the Second Empire and early Third Republic while the traffic visible before its façade records the everyday movement of people and horse drawn vehicles through the surrounding streets. Albumen print approximately 8 x 11 inches mounted on paper. The view centers on the elaborately ornamented façade of the Palais Garnier with numerous horse drawn carriages and pedestrians filling the foreground and the square before the building. The "X Phot." mark identifies the image with Neurdein Frères who used the mark from 1887. The firm produced extensive photographic views of Paris for circulation as tourist and architectural images including monuments civic buildings streets and other recognizable features of the capital. The combination of monumental architecture and active street traffic preserves both the appearance of the Palais Garnier and the transportation patterns of Paris before the widespread replacement of horse drawn vehicles by motor traffic. Excellent condition. A sharp late nineteenth century view combining architectural documentation of the Paris Opera with closely observed evidence of everyday movement through the surrounding urban space. unknown books
1885ref. 140501885. Neurdein Frères Place de la Concorde late nineteenth century records one of Paris's principal civic spaces during the period when the Neurdein photographic enterprise was producing views of French cities monuments and architecture for an expanding tourist market. Place de la Concorde carried several layers of French political history: renamed Place de la Révolution during the French Revolution and used for executions by guillotine it was subsequently reshaped as a monumental public square with the Luxor Obelisk erected at its center in 1836. By the later nineteenth century views of the square formed part of the photographic documentation and commercial circulation of modern Paris. Albumen print measuring 8 ½" x 11" mounted to a stiff light blue paper mount measuring 9 ½" x 12". The image presents a broad view of the Place de la Concorde in Paris preserving the appearance of the square and its surrounding urban setting in the nineteenth century. The lower portion of the print bears the photographer's mark "X Phot." The mark is associated with Neurdein Frères the Paris photographic firm established by Étienne Neurdein and Louis Antonin Neurdein. The firm increasingly concentrated on architectural monument and city views beginning in the 1870s; "X Phot." was among the commercial marks used for its photographic production during the later nineteenth century. The photograph belongs to the extensive nineteenth-century production of Paris views made for travelers and the international photographic market when albumen prints enabled images of the capital's monuments boulevards and public spaces to circulate well beyond France. Place de la Concorde occupied a particularly recognizable position within this visual geography connecting the Tuileries and Champs Élysées and retaining physical associations with both the French Revolution and the nineteenth-century reconstruction of Paris. Very clean with a few marks; very good condition. An early photographic record of Place de la Concorde associated with one of the principal commercial producers of architectural and urban views in nineteenth-century France. unknown books

Part B of Planetary Astronomy from the Renaissance to the Rise of Astrophysics continues the history of celestial mechanics and observational discovery through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It provides a synoptic view of the main developments and furnishes details about the lives ideas and interactions of the various astronomers involved. Twelve different authors have contributed their expertise to this book that begins with the reception of Newton's inverse-square law. In the remainder a large place is given to the development of the mathematical theory of celestial mechanics from Clairaut and Euler to LeVerrier Newcomb Hill and Poincare. This emphasis is balanced by other chapters on observational discoveries and the rapprochement of observation and theory for instance the discovery of Uranus and the asteroids use of Venus transits to refine solar parallax introduction of the method of least squares and the development of planetary and satellite ephemerides. Lists of "Further Reading" provide entry to the literature of the several topics. This book will be of great interest to historians of science and astronomers." TABLE OF CONTENTS: Part V.
