The catalogue of the collection of books and antiquities of Pierre-Adrien Pâris; the greatest professional library of the early 19th century. He bequeathed it to the city of Besançon. It contained a number of the essential books on architecture about 1500 manuscript architectural designs by Pâris and paintings and drawings by Fragonard Boucher and Saint-Aubin. Pâris 1745-1819 was architect to Louis XVI designer of the royal cabinet and directed royal festivities at Versailles Marly and Trianon. During these trips he sketched buildings and artifacts found at Pompeii Herculaneum Paestum and other sites which along with other drawings compose the 1500 architectural designs described here. These experiences prepared him to serve as director of the Académie de France in Rome under Napoleon where he was responsible for excavations at the Colosseum. The library has considerable sections on architecture history the arts of antiquity etc. The first 40 pages provide a biographical sketch of Pâris. Pages 1-146 enumerate 777 lots of books. Camille Claudel 1864-1943 was a French sculptor of whose work little remains and who for many years was best known as the mistress and muse of Auguste Rodin. She was also the sister of Paul Claudel whose journals and memoirs provide much of the scant information available on his sister's life. Claudel and Rodin probably first met in 1883. Shortly thereafter she became his student collaborator model and mistress. While continuing to work on her own pieces she is believed to have contributed as a typical studio assistant or student would have whole figures and parts of figures to Rodin's projects of that period particularly to The Gates of Hell. Throughout the 1930s Gaston Paris 1903-1964 was one of the pillars of the weekly magazine "Vu" founded in 1928 by Lucien Vogel. The only salaried photographer he shared the magazine's pages with Laure Albin-Guillot Germaine Krull André Kertész Martin Munkacsi Man Ray and Robert Capa. Alongside his reports and portraits of artists and celebrities of the time he produced strange photographic series inspired by surrealism work which appeared in "Detective magazine" from the 1930s to the 1950s to illustrate its stories of gangsters and femmes fatales. His archives were purchased by the Agence Roger-Viollet shortly after his death. In 1934 Pierre Boucher 1908-2000 founds with René Zuber the Alliance-Photo agency that delivers the first deontology of photography and enhances the importance of photographers' signatures. Multidisciplinary the French photographer explores the avant-garde aesthetic with surrealist nudes photograms collages and solarizations. He also produces more commercial works illustrating advertisements and books such as Emile Allais' French Skiing Method. 1783ref. 34310Paris. February 4 1783. Preliminary Treaty of England and France On January 20 1783 terms for a general armistice between England and France and Spain were reached two months after terms with the United States had been worked out. A general armistice was agreed upon for February 4. This supplement to the Royal Gazette was probably the first publication of the terms of the British-French agreement. The French advantage after Yorktown had been largely lost with De Grasse's defeat in the Caribbean in 1782 so the net effect was largely a return to status quo with Caribbean possessions of both sides restored. Furthermore England's claims to Newfoundland were maintained and mutual fishing rights off the Canadian coast were agreed upon. Quarto. Later marbled boards leather label. Near fine. 1783ref. 51461Caen. 1783. Publication of the Peace of Paris A regional printing of the official French proclamation of "bonne ferme stable & solide" peace between France and Great Britain bringing an end to the war of the American Revolution and warfare in other colonies and Europe. Although a preliminary peace had been negotiated in Paris as of Nov. 30 1782 with an armistice in effect as of Jan. 20 1783 the final treaty took many more months to conclude both because of last minute wrangling over fishing rights on the Grand Banks and delays in Trans-Atlantic ratification. The final treaties between France England and the United States were originally proclaimed on Nov. 3 1783 and this version of the announcement was printed at Caen on Dec. 27 1783. As a Channel port the notice of peace would have been of particular interest there. Quarto. Antique-style marbled boards gilt leather label. Near fine. Untrimmed. hardcover books
