1948rif. BK0120Atlanta Georgia: Atlanta Music Club 1948. Illustrated program 18 pp. 10 ¾ x 8 ½ inches stapled in illustrated blue wrappers. Near fine condition. A program for Paul Whiteman's all-Gershwin concert at Atlanta's Municipal Auditorium on November 6 1948 built around Whiteman's close place in the history of Gershwin's concert music. Whiteman had commissioned Rhapsody in Blue and conducted its celebrated first performance at Aeolian Hall in 1924 with Gershwin himself at the piano. More than two decades later and eleven years after Gershwin's death Whiteman returned to the composer's work with this touring "musical tribute." The program ranges across Gershwin's popular and concert works opening with an instrumental medley of "Swanee" "Do It Again" "Of Thee I Sing" "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "Love Is Sweeping the Country." Vocalists Eugenie Baird and Russell McIntyre appeared alongside guitarist Mike Pingitore and saxophonist Al Gallodoro while pianist Jane Anderson performed a variation on "I've Got Rhythm" the first movement of the Concerto in F and as the finale Rhapsody in Blue. The booklet also contains a photographic portrait of Whiteman and several essays reviewing his career and his role in the development of American popular and concert music including "The Dean of Modern American Music" and "Tops' Moves to the Blue." . 1970rif. 4900n.p. 1970. Loose Photos. Very Good. Five 8x10 promotional Jazz drummer photos the 2 Kruppas and 1 Lewis are gelatin silver and the 2 Bellson are halftones all variously inscribed and / or signed. The signature on the Lewis photo is signed in the photos' negative and thus not "live" ink - as are the other four "live ink" autographs in this collection. The company "Long & McQuade" is the largest chain of musical instrument retailers in Canada and as we are unsure who Lou Williams Jr. & Sr. are assume that they may have been music store owners. One of the Louie Bellson photos has "March 18 / '79 at Convocation Hall / Toronto Ont." written in blue ink on the verso. All photos a touch age toned w. only minor wear. A nice collection of drummer signed photos showcasing three of Jazzdom's most legendary and time-honored players. unknown
rif. 2496529 September 1963; 41 Webster Street Merrick New York. A good letter full of content. 2pp 8vo. Air mail letter with New York postmark 30 September 1963. Signed ‘Marian’ and addressed to ‘Mr. Les Tompkins / 96 St Helier Ave / Morden / Surrey’. Writing after the publication of an interview with her by Tompkins in ‘Crescendo’ she begins: ‘Dear Les. Thank you & Tony also for the copies of Crescendo - Boy! I was verbose wasn’t I! I got a kick out of the record review & thought everyone was very complimentary. Wish Steve Race had been there! He always insists you can tell a female player and of course I think that is a lot of you-know-what’. ‘Like a real idiot’ she has lost his questionnaire and asks for another copy. ‘Big news. I’m going on a month’s concert tour with Benny Goodman. He called me & I decided it would be a fun thing to do - Red Norro will be going Jimmy Wyble on guitar & Steve Swallow on bass - Benny & I have been rehearsing together & he’s really inspiring to play with and very charming -’. She announces the return of Dill Jones ‘he reopened at the Gaslight Club for an indefinite stay’ and says that she and ‘Jimmy’ her husband ‘played the Central Plaza yesterday’: ‘it’s always a big reunion for us with our friends. Some sitters in were Jo Jones Tyrel Glenn Wild Bill Davision Cutty Cutshall & Louis Metcalfe.’ They have both ‘been busy writing lately and are beginning to get some good songs’. She hopes that ‘Sarah Vaughn will do another of my tunes in her next album. Quincey sic Jones took a couple with him when he left for England last week.’ 29 September [1963]; 41 Webster Street, Merrick, New York. unknown
