Rock 1884-1962 was "captivated by the ritual books he found in the possession of the Naxi religious specialists the 'dongba' while plant hunting in China's borderlands. Rock went on to devote the remaining years of his life to the translation of these books that contained such a treasure house of knowledge a corpus of literature that for Rock offered tantalising glimpses at the indigenous religion of pre-Buddhist Tibet. Rock a voracious autodidact appreciated an intellectual challenge: this was a script that by the time he first encountered it in the 1920s nobody had previously deciphered aside from some exploratory incomplete translations conducted via Chinese by French scholars and explorers. This vast corpus of ritual literature was essentially unexplored territory and this was where Rock liked to tread. Through his assiduous collecting and cataloguing and not without controversy he preserved thousands of these texts in collections now spread throughout the western world . While Rock's first published translations were no more than concise summaries of the stories he discovered within the Naxi manuscripts he later developed a more extensive anthropological style of translation. This meant recording in exacting detail the phonetic reading given by a dongba and then embarking upon a full written commentary. The first translation to use this method was published in 1937 as 'The birth and origin of Dto-mba Shilo the founder of Mo-so shamanism according to Mo-so manuscripts' a seminal work on Dobbaq-sheel'lo the mythical founding father of the dongba religion" see Poupard D.J. Painted cityscapes have always captivated the viewers of medieval works of art. To this day scholars are mesmerised by their capacity to mirror the urban context from which they sprang combined with their ability to symbolize a more abstract world view religious idea or social ideal. Especially oil painting which thrived in the fifteenth-century Low Countries among a heterogeneous elite and the well-off urban middling groups succeeded as no other medium in capturing the urban landscape in its finest details. In order to gain an insight into how late medieval citizens clerics and noblemen conceived of urban society and space this book combines a serial analysis of a large corpus of painted city views with a critical discussion of some well-documented and revealing works of art. Throughout the book a variety of questions are addressed ranging from the religious conception of the city the theatrical dimension of urban space the extent to which Early Netherlandish painting depicted the city as an economic space how images of city and countryside functioned as identity markers of the donor and how technical advances in the field of cartography impacted the portrayal of towns in the sixteenth century. In doing so this study explores the duality of some of the major interpretive schemes that have determined the last few decades of historiography on late medieval Netherlandish culture oscillating between bourgeois and courtly realistic and symbolic profane and religious and innovative versus traditional. 1885ref. 140841885. Dome of the Rock interior nineteenth century records the exposed Foundation Stone at the center of one of Jerusalem's principal sacred monuments. Completed in 691-692 CE under the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik the Dome of the Rock stands on the Haram al-Sharif or Temple Mount a site central to Islamic and Jewish sacred traditions and also closely connected with Christian biblical history. The photograph preserves the relationship between the Rock itself and the architectural enclosure constructed around it more than a millennium earlier. Albumen print measuring 11" x 8.5" unmounted. The Foundation Stone occupies the foreground while columns arches and the decorated interior rise behind it. The surrounding colonnades are faced with marble in their lower sections with mosaic ornament above allowing the photograph to record both the irregular natural surface of the Rock and the elaborate architectural treatment of its enclosure. Jewish tradition associates the Temple Mount with the First and Second Temples and identifies the Rock with the site of the Holy of Holies; the Second Temple was destroyed by Roman forces under Titus in 70 CE. Islamic tradition connects the Rock with Muhammad's Night Journey and ascent to heaven while traditions associated with Abraham's attempted sacrifice also attach sacred meaning to the site. The Dome of the Rock occupies the Haram al-Sharif alongside the Al-Aqsa Mosque and other religious and educational buildings. Nineteenth century photographs of its interior recorded spaces that were considerably less accessible to many Western travelers than Jerusalem's exterior monuments while the albumen process circulated such views through the expanding photographic market for images of the Holy Land. Very good condition. A detailed nineteenth century interior view centered on the Foundation Stone and the marble and mosaic architectural decoration surrounding it. unknown
