Un personaggio geniale e poliedrico come Howard Smith - firma di una rubrica iconica per la controcultura sulla rivista «The Village Voice» - era il profilo ideale per diventare il grande narratore di questa ribellione creativa. Fra il 1969 e il 1972 gli viene affidata una trasmissione notturna dall'emittente radiofonica WABC, The Howard Smith Scenes, e la sua voce diventa subito leggendaria. Smith invita in studio i più significativi personaggi della controcultura - registi, attori, scrittori, rockstar e artisti - e intreccia dialoghi di straordinaria libertà e franchezza. Ciascuno di loro sta attraversando un momento irripetibile della propria carriera e lo racconta al microfono di Smith, che trasmette in diretta o registra le interviste su grandi nastri e li archivia nel seminterrato di casa sua, dove solo pochi anni fa, dopo la sua morte, sono stati ritrovati dal figlio.
