Rigoureuse étude sur les " Rembetika ", chants chantés dans les quartiers pauvres de Smryna, d’Istanbul et des ports de Grèce à la fin du XIXe siècle, et devenus la musique bouzouki populaire des années 1920 à 1950, et qui ont de nombreux parallèles avec le Blues américain. Comme le blues, ces chants étaient à l'origine, la musique des outsiders et immigrés, qui développaient leur propre argot et leurs propres formes d’expression. Ce livre consacré à cette musique ethnique, le1er d'ethnomusicologie, écrit en anglais à tenter une étude générale du monde des rembetes qui fumaient du haschich et dansaient le Zeibekiko. Il est enrichi de nombreuses photographies de l’époque, en noir. Ecrit par une musicienne et écrivaine australienne, il décrit le contexte historique et sociologique, ainsi que les caractéristiques musicales et leur instrumentation. La deuxième partie du livre est un recueil de chansons traduites en anglais, accompagnées de photographies de l’époque, en noir, ainsi que des reproductions de partitions et de manuscrits originaux de chansons. Cette troisième édition a été réécrite et modifiée, avec une nouvelle introduction. La bibliographie et la discographie ont été mises à jour. Edition en partie originale, en état superbe, proche du parfait.
