Il libro si apre con il periodo fra gli anni '30 e la fine dei '50, quando in più zone del Sud degli Stati Uniti nascevano prima il blues, poi il boogie woogie e il rythm'n'blues e dove infine - aggiungendo un pizzico di country "bianco" - si sarebbe plasmato quello che i ragazzi avrebbero conosciuto come rock'n'roll. Ma le mutazioni erano appena cominciate: nella decade successiva, gli anni '60, periodo storicamente colmo di fermenti culturali e artistici, rivendicazioni socio-politiche, tematiche esistenziali e di una ricerca musicale senza confini, paragonabile a un vero "big bang del rock", la musica sarebbe passata attraverso continue trasformazioni e fughe in avanti.
