Fino al 2012, anno dell'ottava e - per il momento - ultima stagione della serie, Desperate housewives ha catalizzato in tutto il mondo l'attenzione di 120 milioni di spettatori, riportando al successo (insieme a Lost e Grey's Anatomy) l'emittente americana ABC. In che modo l'autore Marc Cherry e la ABC sono riusciti a trasformare il peggior genere televisivo, la soap opera della casalinga, in una serie trasmessa in prime time, capace di riscuotere un consenso planetario e di raggiungere un pubblico assai diversificato? E in che senso va intesa l'affermazione, comune a critici e spettatori americani, circa il "piacere colpevole" di seguire così appassionatamente un prodotto culturale di bassa estrazione? Questo saggio analizza i mezzi utilizzati per costruire una serie che coltiva l'ambiguità, è attraversata dal femminismo ma anche dalla misoginia, è a un tempo progressista e conservatrice, piace agli adolescenti e ai loro genitori, e soprattutto riesce nel prodigio di proporsi insieme audace e largamente fruibile.
