A rather nice production with nine double-page plates frontispiece and double-page table. Unbound. In original grey printed wraps with gold foil seal of the society laid down as part of cover design. Good in lightly aged wraps. Some tissue guards. Two essays: 'La Societe des Ingenieurs Civils de France de 1848 a 1896' by M. A. Mallet and 'Le Nouvel Hotel de la Societe des Ingenieurs Civils de France' by M. F. Delmas 'Architecte de la Societe'. Delmas's comments on his design are revealing: 'Pour la facade je ne me suis pas preoccupe a proprement parler de lui donner un style determine: j'ai pense qu'un hotel d'ingenieurs devait avant tout etre reconnaissable par son caractere utilitaire; aussi ai-je cherche a accuser a l'exterieur les services interieurs.' Letterhead in black and red ink. In fair condition aged and worn with creasing at head. A sensitive letter of condolence beginning: 'Dear Willy I was so shocked to hear on Thursday of the great loss you have sustained and I hesitated to write to you for letters of condolence are such empty useless things. But on the other hand I dont want you to suppose that I feel indifferent to anything that touches you so closely & deeply. We have been such sympathetic friends for so long that tho I did not know your father he too seemed almost like an old friend.' The letter concludes with a rumination on mortality Dredge finding sympathy 'not wholly useless but … a poor thing in the presence of death'. Note: This letter derives from a collection of letters of condolence to the Forbes family on the death of William Forbes father of Stanhope Forbes founder of the Newlyn School of Art whose brother was "William". Marshall Space Flight Center Huntsville Alabama under authorization of Technical Directive A2-ABX-011 30 December 1965.Years in advance of NASA's planned Apollo mission to the moon in 1969 this 1965 technical document was prepared as a study on the feasibility of transforming the Shelter Laboratory Module into a Lunar Shelter/Observatory with optical telescope. The first lunar observatory and telescope would have to wait until the 1972 Apollo 16 mission but this study documents one of the early efforts to that end by a NASA contractor. This Gemini/Apollo era document is 57 pages with technical illustrations a Conclusions and Recommendations section and References. INTRODUCTION: "This report covers the selection of the most applicable second-generation shelter system and the transformation of this system into a lunar surface shelter/observatory. The concepts conceived in this study will provide the necessary space to support two scientist-astronauts for twenty-eight 28 days on the lunar surface." OBJECTIVE: "To prepare conceptual designs of a lunar surface shelter/observatory capable of providing two scientist-astronauts with support for a twenty-eight 28 day lunar surface mission. accomplished by transforming an existing shelter design into a shelter/observatory by the inclusion of an optical telescope and associated equipment.".
