ref. 7976Four books from the research library of world-renowned expert in soil dynamics and earthquake engineering Robert V. Whitman. Whitman earned both his masters and doctoral degrees in engineering from MIT where he then taught for over 40 years and remained an active member of the MIT community for many more years as a professor emeritus. Whitman worked with Professor Donald Taylor during his doctoral studies. Their work on slope stability under dynamic loading established the basis for the "Newmark sliding block method" for estimating earthquake-induced ground displacements. In 1981 he presented the Terzaghi Lecture on risk analysis in geotechnical engineering at the American Society of Civil Engineer’s National Convention. He won the Terzaghi Award for outstanding contributions to knowledge in the fields of soil mechanics subsurface and earthwork engineering in 1987. Much of his later research focused on a methodology for estimating losses from earthquakes and he led the committee that developed a computer software called HAZUS which FEMA expanded to include floods and hurricanes. First edition of this very rare original Progressive Era water pump and water supply catalogue extolling the latest innovations from the Kewanee Water Supply Co. which manufactured and sold James Jelinek’s breakthrough water supply pumps. Jelinek developed the systems of pumping air & water through the same system thereby introducing water supplies under pressure and allowing local farm and municipal water systems to move away from water tower gravity tanks which often froze in the winter and delivered warm water in the summer. They were specially built with significantly thicker steel in tanks and pumps in order to cut down on repair breakage and developed such a great reputation they largely ran other manufacturers out of the business. The company thrived until sold following World War II to an elevator company and closed in 1949. Worldcat locates 1 copy Harvard; See: History of Kewanee Private Utilities Co. 1919ref. 2655Various locations including Wyoming Nebraska and Iowa 1919. Very good plus. Forty-two original black-and-white photographs and real photo postcards most with manuscript annotations bound into a two-ring leather binder. Two additional postcards laid in. Minor occasional dust soiling but overall in excellent shape. An intriguing pocket-sized binder containing a collection of photographs and real photo postcards documenting large-scale construction projects in the American West mostly involving concrete projects such as dams drainage reservoir infrastructure railroads and more between about 1913 to 1920. All of the projects occur on or west of the Mississippi River in locations such as Keokuk Iowa; Ardmore South Dakota; Grand Island Nebraska; and Arminto Wyoming. The projects cover a wide range of subject matter from a simple base for a railroad mail sack crane to entire dam wall construction and seem to feature several involving sprayable concrete commonly known as gunite. This material was rather new in the 1910s but is still widely in use to the present day. The majority of the images are captioned in manuscript identifying the project or location or often both. These include a power-generating dam in Keokuk; reinforcement of a reservoir dam near Lysite Wyoming; widening of a cut for the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad through Arminto; memorializing a concrete crib wall for the same railroad at the Bancroft St. Vincent Omaha; the installation of an eighteen-inch wall casting and sinking the Kelly well in Grand Island; documenting frost action on a brick chimney and water tank and also picturing a "concrete gun" in Worland Wyoming; and others. The images are organized into two sections with small tabs one reading "Dams" and the other "Miscellan." The compiler of the pictures is not identified but he or she was most likely involved in the operational aspects of the construction projects. One of the captions is initialed at the bottom "JRH" which may help scholars identify the compiler with further research. The binder itself was produced in Kansas City which may be an additional clue to the compiler's identity. A small but focused collection featuring major western construction projects from the early-20th century. unknown

8vo. 22 pp., final blank. Papered spine. Rare, early treatise on yellow fever, in the early 19th century a poorly understood disease that was causing much sensation throughout the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and indeed the entire continent, due to several spectacular outbreaks in southern Europe. Not until the 1880s would the cause and transmission (the yellow fever mosquito) be identified correctly. - Estreicher erroneously attributes this brochure to the Spanish physician Juan Manuel de Aréjula, who had published similar works on the subject at the same time (translations even appearing in Vienna). In fact, the booklet was issued on behalf of the Austrian state ("auf allerhöchsten Befehl", at the Emperor's command) and distributed free of charge among general practicioners and surgeons in the Austrian countries so as to disseminate the relevant medical knowledge as quickly as possible. A Polish translation was published that same year. - Browned and duststained; traces of old shelfmarks and stamps to title-page and final blank. Only five copies in libraries worldwide (Austrian National Library, Munich, Frankfurt, Tübingen, Wellcome Collection). Wellcome II, 72. Lesky 67. Estreicher (19th c.) I, 92 and cf. I, 39 (Polish translation).
