The date is confirmed by its citation in a Congressional report "Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer On Charges Made Against Department Of Justice By Louis F. Post And Others." "We have on many occasions issued to you calls for action. We have told you that protest meetings will not help to free the thousands of social war prisoners but only by real action through the starting of the general strike throughout the entire country will they be freed. You did not listen to us who urged action. You chose the easier road. You listened instead to politicians who asked you to beg of the exploiters of America to be so kind as to release those whom they imprisoned. We remind you of the mistakes that you have made and how you have been fooled and betrayed." Warns that those who participate in May Day parades sponsored by the National Security League "will be traitors to our class" calling on readers to mark May Day instead by forming anarchist groups to begin a general strike. "When we march or hold our meetings we must never forget to be armed to repel those misguided soldiers or policemen who will dare to attack us as they have done until now! . The First of May should be the signal for the start of the social revolution in this country." The author whose original name was Shmuel Marcus went by many pseudonyms the best-known of which was Marcus Graham; he claimed to be a native of Montreal but when the United States attempted to deport him to Canada Canada refused on the grounds that there was no actual evidence of his Canadian citizenship. Other attempts to deport him to Mexico and the Soviet Union were similarly rebuffed. The author went on to edit the newspaper Man! one of the most important American anarchist publications of the 1930s. unknown books

"Root was a former common-school teacher who moved to Peoria County from Ohio in the fall of 1830. He apparently became a farmer after moving to Illinois" Byrd. An eccentric populist attack against big banks and the American legal system from an aging Peoria county farmer who notes that for "more than fifty years I have seen that there was some thing radically wrong in the political and religious world . I exerted myself for more than half a century politically and religiously for the sole purpose of heading and stopping those evils but all to no effect. The public journals both religious and political would not publish my communications because they were Truth." He was apparently a member of the National Reform Association an organization bent on re-Christianizing American society. He also served again in 1772 the year indicated on the rear cover. The Rous family Quakers residing in Barbados were leading planters on the island since the late 1630s. The fifty-nine plates bound in this volume to complement the text were originally executed for The Liturgy of the Church of England; Illustrated with Fifty Nine Historical and Explanatory Sculptures Engraved by Mess. Ravenett Grignion Scotin Canott Walker and W. Ryland printed in London in 1755 by Edward Ryland. According to the titlepage included here as one of the extra-illustrated plates this work was published according to an act of Parliament on May 1 1755. However no copies of this 1755 title are recorded in OCLC or ESTC. In addition to The Book of Common Prayer and the engravings from The Liturgy of the Church of England this copy also contains a 1768 edition of A New Version of the Psalms of David first printed in 1698. Considering the recipient and the combined contents of the volume these two texts and the extensive suite of engravings are bound in an appropriately sumptuous binding. 1786Best.-Nr. 34053Philadelphia: Printed by Hall and Sellers 1786. The Suppressed Original Episcopal Book of Common Prayer The American Protestant Episcopal Church was founded after the American Revolution as an adaptation of the Church of England in the new United States. The church was founded at a convention in Philadelphia in 1785 at which it was agreed to create a separate prayer book. The present title is the result and it caused great controversy upon its publication. Among the ill-considered revisions were "changes and omissions of such drastic nature as among other things the deletion of the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds. The Proposed Book proved unwelcome to clergy and laity even its suggestion of a prayer for the Fourth of July being taken exception to. Its use was brief and not general" Page. "This edition contains the alterations which were intended to adapt the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England to the changed political conditions of this country; and is the result of a convention held in Philadelphia in 1785 presided over by the Reverend William White. The proposed Prayer Book met with much criticism and opposition in the church owing to its radical changes and was never adopted" - Evans. Rare. 12mo. Contemporary calf original endpapers. 1778Best.-Nr. 44871London: Henry Fenwick 1778. The county of Middlesex essentially London was the heart of radical politics in England at the time of the Revolution and the greatest pro-American feeling was found in the merchants and working classes of the metropolis. The colonists often appealed directly to Middlesex for support. These works contain petitions relating to the American colonies dating from June 1774 to March 1778 including petitions regarding the Quebec Act in which the people express their concern over the encroachment of Catholicism and French influence in the colony. Likewise it includes the text of a letter from John Hancock to the mayor of London dated September 1775 expressing a hope for peace between Britain and the colonies. Adams notes that these two titles are often found bound together sometimes with other publications of the Council. The petition of the freeholders of Middlesex County concerns the John Wilkes case. Wilkes ran for Parliament and was elected as a radical candidate for Middlesex but was arrested and imprisoned shortly thereafter for seditious libel. Wilkes spoke out against the British war against the American colonies and his opposition to the Crown was a rallying point for the American cause. Contemporary calf spine gilt leather label.
