Work 2 1708 or 1720 Novum Testamentum Domini nostri Jesu Christi interprete Theodoro Beza Overall Condition: Good to Very Good. Book of Common Prayer complete. New Testament lacking title page. Without front and rear blank. PROVENANCE David Enderton Johnson was a biblical scholar author and an exceptionally prolific high-end book collector. Among rare book dealers his library is famously referred to as the 'Johnson cache' or the 'David Enderton Johnson library'. He was known for tracking down and acquiring highly sought-after valuable volumes-particularly pre-publication advanced review copies bound proofs and first editions personally signed by major mid-century literary figures like Vladimir Nabokov and C.S. Lewis. As an author and scholar he published works focused on theology and scriptural literacy most notably: Opening the New Testament: A Way to Read the Bible in Logical and Historical Order and Uppsala to Nairobi 1968-1975: Report of the Central Committee to the Fifth Assembly of the World Council of Churches. ABOUT THE BOOK Bound in contemporary Queen Anne black paneled fine morocco. Boards with gilt paneling fillets and corner fleurons and rosettes. Spine with five raised bands separating compartments richly tooled and ruled in gilt. All edges gilt. Gilt inner dentelles and marbled endpapers. Two duodecimo works 6.25 in x 3.75 in.0 bound in the following order: 1 Liturgy or the book of common prayers received in the Anglican Church. Epistles gospels and psalms are included according to Sebastian Castellio's translation; all other things were provided in Latin by Thomas Parsell. Published in 1706 by A & J Churchill in London. Collated and complete: 24 180 148 pp. First Latin edition translated by Thomas Parsell. 2 The New Testament of Our Lord Jesus Christ translated by Theodore Beza. Published in either 1708 or 1720 by A & Churchill in London. Lacking title page textually complete: 3-347 1 pp. Much research of font type used page collation book format and other info in the English Short Title Catalog WorldCat OCLC and bibliographic sources was used to narrow down the publisher and date of publication. NOTE: It is most likely the 1708 New Testament edition given its proximity in date to the 1706 Book of Common Prayer it is bound with by the same publisher; however the 1720 edition cannot be ruled out without carbon dating or some advanced method as the two editions were nearly identical. ABOUT THEODORE BEZA Theodore Beza 1519 - 1605 was a French Calvinist Protestant theologian reformer and scholar who played an important role in the Protestant Reformation. He was a disciple of John Calvin and lived most of his life in Geneva. Beza succeeded Calvin as the spiritual leader of the Republic of Geneva. Between 1565 and 1604 he produced several editions in Greek with accompanying Latin translations and detailed annotations. Beza's editions served as primary textual sources for the Geneva Bible and influenced later translations including the 1611 King James Version. His work ensured that the Greek New Testament was both readable and teachable supporting ministers theologians and students across Europe. CONDITION REPORT Good to Very Good. 1872réf. Rare.
