ref. 017685[La Rochelle] Plusieurs Citoyens de cette Commune, Notice sur la nouvelle Nomenclature des Rues de la Rochelle. La Rochelle, P.L. Chauvet, an troisième [1794-1795]. In-8, XIV-466p.

Bork Former U. S. Solicitor General and Former Acting Attorney General of the United States and a Former U. S. Court of Appeals Judge. -- DESCRIPTION: This is the only currently available book to identify explain analyze and discuss some of the most important and controversial principles of the common law of England. Among the many questions addressed here are: Is the common law based on principles or not If so what are they and where do they come from Can judges make up principles Are logic and reason still principles of the law Does the European Union law enjoy higher law status Does human rights law enjoy higher law status With the great emphasis today placed on rights does the old principle still hold true that "Where there's a right there's a remedy" What has happened to the doctrine "Nobody shall profit from his own wrongdoing" And what about the human rights supposedly guaranteed by the European Convention This book focuses on two: individual liberty and freedom of expression. Michael Arnheim addresses these questions and also examines practical principles which can make all the difference to for example the validity of a will the interpretation of a contract or the outcome of a claim in negligence or administrative law. Written is a straightforward easily accessible style and drawing on recent cases such as those involving Tony Martin Naomi Campbell Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones this book will be illuminating to practicing lawyers and students alike. -- with a bonus offer--; 520-Arnhe; Arnheim Michael T. ref. GD013479okBC2S4Church of England Church of England. The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites of the Church. England probably Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge ca. 1840's-1850's. Small 12mo contemporary blind stamped brown calf with a brass clasp lettering on upper cover includes the word "Knowledge" apparently part of the stamp of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Title and preliminnary leaves wanting binding heavily rubbed and worn with loss along spine and joints clasp remaining scattered handling wear staining and small edge losses internally. Front board almost detached. A well used field copy. The Crimean War prayer book of John Matthews of the 21st Royal North British Fusiliers with extensive manuscript inscriptions locating him at the British camp before Sebastopol and at Scutari. Matthews records himself on an endleaf as "John Matthews No. 4 Company/21st R.N.B. Fusiliers/Camp before Sebastopol/4th Division." Elsewhere he signs the volume variously as "Private 21st Regt" and Corpl. J. Matthews 21st Fusiliers." A particulary evocative ownership verso reads in part "John Matthews is my name and England is my nation/Crimea is my dwelling place and Christ is my salvation" followed by the traditional lines asking that the little book remember him after his death. Additional manuscript entries include "Scutari Bk. Hosp./Near Constantinople" apparently referring to the Barrack Hosiptal at Scutari together with a list of Crimean locations and actions: "Alma" "Inkerman" "Balaclava"and "Sebastopol." The 21st Royal North British Fusiliers served with the 4th Division in the Crimea and participated in the principal operations of the campaign. An unusually personal surviving devotional object from the Crimean War: a soldiers pocket Book of Common Prayer carried and repeatedly inscribed during the campaign with direct contemporary references to Sebastopol Scutari and the major battles of the war. The partial SPCK blind stamp is particularly appropriate the Society having distributed Prayer Books among British servicemen during the period. Lacking title page and therefore without a securely identifiable imprint or edition; date and SPCK attribution based on binding topography and surviving cover lettering. Hard Cover. Fair/No Dust Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Church of England Hardcover

Three-leaf three page typed report concerning the adaptation potential of Jackson's 'The Haunting of Hill House' for the screen. ABPC reader Jack Common regards the novel particularly its end as 'unsatisfactory.' He also regards the ending as 'fatal' for a filmmaker 'with no real story to back him up' a 'cheat' on the audience. 'So no recommendation.' The Haunting of Hill House was successfully adapted in 1963 by director Robert Wise and had multiple subsequent adaptations for film theater radio and television. 'Received' stamped to first page dated 19 Sep 1960. Small crinkles to top edges consistent with previous presence of a paperclip. Small pencil note to blank verso of last page. 1794ref. C3188A splendid copy of the Good and Harding Book of Common Prayer in a striking masonic binding by John Lovejoy. The London bookbinder John Lovejoy fl. c. 1781–1812 is known by his distinctive Masonic bindings employing an array of Masonic tools often arranged in striking compositions. He was himself a Mason from around 1791 until 1812. His practices as an employer however earned him a certain notoriety among binders and the nickname 'the Tyrant': as a journeyman in 1781 he advocated a reduction in the working day from fourteen to thirteen hours but when a master binder he bitterly opposed such a change and was among the employers who prosecuted the leaders of the 1786 strike. Although it is accepted that Lovejoy was not as previously thought the only binder using Masonic motifs close comparison of the tools with other examples of his work suggests this binding to be his. Good and Harding's 1794 Common Prayer appeared in two settings one octavo and the other a splendid large quarto as here. The fine series of stipple-engravings shows both biblical and liturgical scenes including several by Federico Bartolozzi and Luigi Schiavonetti after Thomas Stothard and Silvester Harding. The plates are variously dated between 1791 the date of the dedication and 1794 suggesting the work was several years in progress and perhaps issued in parts; copies are rarely seen with all fifteen engravings. ESTC T88819; for Lovejoy see Ramsden London Bookbinders 1780-1840 pl. XIX; and Howe & Childe The Society of London Bookbinders 1780-1950. 1641ref. 371384London: Robert Barker printer to the Kings most excellent Majestie and by the Assignes of John Bill 1641. Title within woodcut border. Text in two columns. 104pp. 8vo. Nineteenth-century full dark red morocco stamped in gilt. Gilt edges. Marbled endpapers with GTS bookplates on first pastedown. Pages cropped. Autograph initials on title page with additional ownership inscription on A3. Title within woodcut border. Text in two columns. 104pp. 8vo. This compact Book of Common Prayer was published during a period of particularly fractious religious tumult just prior to the start of the First English Civil War which was fueled in part by what was seen as King Charles I's pro-Catholic sympathies exemplified by his implementation of a more ceremonial sacramental version of High Anglicanism. Some of these contentious changes - as well the disquiet fomented by them - are alluded to in the Preface and "Of Ceremonies Why Some Be abolished and some retained" all of which follow "An Act for the Uniformitie of Common Prayer" on A2-A3. "Cum privilegio" printed at the foot of the title page. A gift to the General Theological Seminary from the then-Dean of Trinity Cathedral George McCormick.
