Single double-sided printed sheet of promotional information for potential student travelers to French colonial Syria 29cm. Generally toned with previous folds creased and toned more heavily. Small puncture to center where all folds join and closed tear to bottom of center fold. Year penciled to recto top right corner. An About Very Good example of pre-WWII tourism material. Likely geared toward American students the tourism department attempts to entice any wanderlusters to Syria with inexpensive domestic travel "cheerful little coffee houses" and "strange Arab night clubs." In 1936 Syria would see a general strike among the Syrian people and a treaty negotiation later in the year to guarantee the people self-rule after another 25 years of French rule. Literary and cinematic critique Elstree Studios' report of the detective novel The Pale Horse. 4pp. typed report on ABPC headed paper rectos only reader's delivery stamp to first page dated 9 October 1961. Report: Perforations down left edge from office binding. Very well preserved. Book: with some dustiness signs of handling small nicks. Very good. Agatha Christie's The Pale Horse was published by Collins Crime Club on 6th November 1961; ABPC at Elstree received their copy one month earlier and Common's report was ready two days after publication. November 1961 is very favourable. A detailed two-page synopsis is followed by a succinct and unequivocal recommendation: 'This one has excellent filmic possibilities I consider. Make an offer.' No film version followed but the story has been adapted twice for television the first time in 1996 for ITV and the second in 2010 as part of the Agatha Christie's Marple series also for ITV with Julia McKenzie in the title role. Contemporary black full calf with raised bands and gilt tooling to spine and boards. All edges gilt with comb marbled endpapers. A charming early bookseller's label to front pastedown for the George Street Stationer 60 Gracechurch Street. Black ink ownership and gift inscriptions through several generations to verso of fly-leaf and both sides of the first blank. A minor stain to the top edge of the first 20 or so leaves otherwise internally clean. Moderate general wear to attractive contemporary binding with some minor repair to head of spine. Very good. Splendidly bound A very attractive large-format Prayer Book for lectern use in a resplendent sunburst binding composed of red morocco onlays and richly gilt. Folio 485 x 292 mm. Contemporary black straight-grain morocco spine lettered and tooled in gilt red and green morocco onlays to form sunburst on covers with gilt flames angels stars and cross centrepiece all within gilt and blind floral frame marbled endpapers gilt edges. Late-19th-century family register of the Powell family to rear and front free endpapers early correction of King George to William coronated 1830 and the queen to Queen Adelaide on relevant prayers. A few scratches to rear cover crease to title page slight spotting leaves 3D1 and 2 adhered together. A very good copy. unknown
