1910réf. 150271910. Association pour l'Enseignement Secondaire des Jeunes Filles. Geography prize medal 1910 documenting formal recognition of young women's academic achievement in France during the expansion of secondary education for girls in the early twentieth century. Awarded in connection with the Association pour l'Enseignement Secondaire des Jeunes Filles at the Sorbonne the medal identifies geography as the field of achievement and belongs to the institutional culture through which women students received increasingly formal academic instruction and distinction. Bronze medal measuring 1.75 inches in diameter. The obverse depicts a seated classical female figure beside a pedestal decorated with laurel wreaths extending a wreath in her right hand as a symbol of academic reward. The reverse is engraved in part: "Association Pour L'Ensegnement Secondaire des Jeunes Filles a la Sorbonne.Geographie.1910." The inscription directly associates the award with secondary education for young women the Sorbonne and achievement in geography. The medal dates from a period when French girls' secondary education was expanding but remained institutionally distinct from that provided to boys. Its academic imagery and engraved subject record the formal recognition of a young woman's achievement in geography in 1910. The earlier identification of the figure as Terpsichore cannot be confirmed from the supplied evidence; Terpsichore is traditionally the Muse of dance rather than education. No condition defects have been supplied. unknown
